English language requirements

All Monash applicants must satisfy the minimum English language requirements of the university

For the requirements below, some undergraduate courses have higher TOEFL and IELTS score requirements. Graduate courses require an IELTS academic score of at least 6.5 or equivalent, and some graduate courses require a higher score.

You can meet these requirements in one of the following ways:

VCE/Year 12/Final year high school qualification
You have achieved a satisfactory level of performance in an English subject at Year 12 or equivalent level. For VCE students, this means a study score of at least 25 in units 3 and 4 in any VCE English subject. From Semester 1, 2009 the English as a Second Language (ESL) minimum score requirement will be  five points higher than VCE English subjects ie, at least 30 in ESL.

Tertiary/Post-secondary school studies

You have studied in an institution where English is the language of instruction and assessment for the entire institution and have satisfactorily completed the equivalent of one full-time year of either:

  • a university undergraduate award program, or
  • a TAFE or VET diploma program, or
  • a program that has been assessed as being taught at an equivalent level to Monash University undergraduate study 

Documentary evidence in the form of a letter or transcript is required from the institution at which the study was undertaken.

English language proficiency tests

Note: Some undergraduate and graduate courses have higher TOEFL and IELTS score requirements.

Undertaken within 24 months prior to your study commencement date and have achieved the following results:

IELTS
(International English Language Testing System - Academic)
Minimum overall test score required is 6.5. 
The individual band scores required:
Reading 6.5
Listening 6.5
Writing 6.0
Speaking 6.0. 

TOEFL
(American Test of English as a Foreign Language).
Minimum test scores required are:
Paper-based test - 580 with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 4.5
Computer-based test - 237 with an Essay Rating (ER) of at least 4.5
Internet-based - 90 overall, at least 22 in writing and no section lower than 20.

Please note that Computer based TOEFL (CBT) have not been conducted since September 2006. Therefore CBT results will only be valid to September 2008.

You must include the original IELTS, TOEFL or TWE test report with your application.

Single Units

All of your secondary schooling was in English and you have successfully completed at least two university level subjects in an institution where English is the language of instruction and assessment. The university subjects must be “English-rich” and judged an appropriate test of proficiency in English language by the managing Monash faculty of the course applied for.

You have successfully completed the Monash University English Language Bridging Program, or equivalent programs, at the appropriate level. For further information visit MUELC.


Note: for applicants whose secondary schooling was not entirely in English, any result or qualification listed above must have been gained or completed within the two years prior to commencement of the course in which enrolment is sought.
