Information for new students at Gippsland

New Students

It's not an easy transition from Secondary School to University. One of the best ways to succeed at University right from the start is to get to know the campus and who's who. Also build up a group of friends to help you. Here are a few tips to try and make it a little easier for you.

  • Take part in Orientation activities - They might not sound cool but it's the best way to meet people, make friends and get connected to university life.
  • Spend time on campus finding your way around - Health, Wellbeing and Development have maps of campus along with bus timetables and maps of Churchill, Morwell, Moe and Traralgon
  • Say "hi" to someone - you never know they might say "hi" back. Sometimes that's all it takes to start a new friendship.
  • Talk to other people in your class - A lot of worry and anxiety can be alleviated by finding out what other students think and are going through as well.

Handling Change

There are at least three ways to deal with these challenges to reduce the impact of change:

  1. Minimise the change; ie. planning. The more understanding you have of a soon-to-happen change, the less will be its impact on you.
  2. Reduce the negative effects of the change; focus on the positive results to be expected from the change - keep your eye on the goals you have set
  3. Learn to deal with change by changing yourself. If we aren't certain of what will happen, we have a greater tendency to exaggerate the negative impact of the situations
