Why Use The Counselling Service?

Life doesn't always proceed smoothly the way we would like, we all have high and low points. Getting some support can be really beneficial in making it through the difficult times.

There may be difficulty in adjusting to change, distressing events can occur and people can experience uncomfortable feelings such as anxiety, depression or loneliness. Others may be experiencing difficulties in relationships or not be achieving their academic goals as a result of procrastination, loss of motivation or need assistance in getting organised. Sometimes physical illness can result from life's pressures.

What Does Counselling Offer?

Individual, couple and group counselling by professional staff with backgrounds in Social Work and Psychology.

Counselling helps explore issues, develop different perspectives and generate creative solutions to difficulties. Counselling offers an opportunity to discuss your problems with someone who can remain objective and assist you in developing new skills to manage life issues. The counsellor's role is not to tell you what to do, but to assist in the process of finding better solutions that suit your circumstances.

Counselling sessions are usually one hour in length, and they take place in a comfortable, quiet setting.

Counsellors can also advise and assist with University procedures, eg special consideration, exclusion etc and facilitate in issues arising with other areas of the university, including grievances and harassment.

Confidentiality - Counsellors are regulated by strict ethical guidelines regarding maintenance of confidentiality and all professional conduct.
