Positive Psychology Lunchtime Discussion Groups

Jeff McLean (Senior Lecturer in the Department of Management) and Suzanne Wolf (Manager, Health, Wellbeing and Development at Caulfield campus) will continue to host Positive Psychology lunchtime discussion groups on Tuesdays during Semester 2 of 2008.

Come join fellow students and staff for lively and interactive discussions on all aspects of happiness, wellbeing, acknowledging strengths and accentuating the positive.

Lessons from the Science of Positive Psychology with Dr Chris Peterson Dr Nansook Park

This lecture describes the new science of Positive Psychology, an umbrella term for the scientific study of the life most worth living. Research findings from Positive Psychology are providing a more complete and balanced scientific understanding of the human experience and the presentation will outline what has been learned so far about the psychological good life and how to achieve it.

Dr Chris Peterson is Professor of Psychology and Organizational Studies and former Director of Clinical Training at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA. He is the research director of the Values in Action (VIA)Project, which is arguably the most ambitious research project to datewithin positive psychology. He has created (a) a coherent classificationof human strengths and virtues and (b) reliable and valid strategies forassessing these aspects of excellence. Dr. Peterson is also well-known forhis pioneering studies on optimism and health.

Dr Nansook Park is Associate Professor of Psychology at University of Rhode Island, USA. Her main research interest is the promotion ofpositive development and well-being across life span in different culture settings. She is interested in the correlates, mechanisms, and consequences of character strengths and virtues, happiness, and positive experiences, and especially their role in resiliency, well-being, health, family functioning, education and work

Craig Hassed

In Mindfulness Meditation - Dr Craig Hassed is a General Practitioner and senior lecturer at the Monash University Department of General Practice.  His teaching, research and clinical interests involve mindfulness-based stress management, mind-body medicine, meditation, holistic healthcare, health promotion, complementary therapies and medical ethics.  Craig is regularly invited to speak in Australia and overseas on these issues and also teaches in the cancer support programs at the Gawler Foundation, and takes courses at the Petrea King Quest for Life Centre.  He writes regularly for medical journals particularly in "Philosophy of Medicine" and has published two books on these issues entitled "New Frontiers in Medicine" (Volume 1 and 2) and a third book on mindfulness-based stress management entitled "Know Thyself".  Craig has also been a regular media commentator on these topics.

Matthieu Ricard

In May, 2008 Matthieu presented an interesting talk on Cultivating the Inner Condition for Genuine Happiness.  Matthieu, a former molecular biologist, Buddhist monk and French interpreter for H.H. Dalai Lama is the author of the book "A guide to Developing Life's Most Important Skill - Happiness".

Tal Ben Shahar

Tal Ben Shahar, a leading Positive Psychologist from Harvard University visited Monash in August 2007. His lecture with students and staff was very well attended. To access the podcast of the lecture visit the Positive Psychology podcast link.

George Vaillant

Positive Monash welcomed George Vaillant, Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and one of the founders of the Positive Psychology movement to the Caulfield campus on  March 19th 2008.

George has provided us with some notes from the lecture on Positive Emotions Are Not the Same as Happiness. A podcast of the presentation will be available here soon plus you can check out his Spiritual Evolution - a scientific defence of faith article (PDF 89kb).

Felicia Huppert

Professor Felicity Huppert, Director Well-being Institute, University of Cambridge, visited Monash to present on 'The Science of Well-being - Implications for Flourishing Across the Life-cycle' on 21 April 2008. A podcast of the presentation will be available here soon.
