Counselling at South Africa Campus

Individual Counselling

This service is free to Monash students and staff and can involve short-term problem resolution or longer, more intensive psychotherapy, so it can be useful to those with mild difficulty in their lives as well as those with more serious or long-standing problems, where referrals can be arranged if necessary.

Items often discussed are:

  • personal unhappiness and distress
  • approaches to study and study difficulties
  • self esteem and confidence issues
  • dealing with stress, anxiety and depression
  • examination performance
  • course and vocational uncertainties
  • relationship and sexual issues
  • marriage and family difficulties
  • bereavement
  • uncertainties about deferring or leaving South Africa
  • work related problems
  • transition problems
  • anger management
  • sexual harassment / assault

The service is free, confidential and designed for students and staff at Monash South Africa.

The following professional counselors are available to serve the students at Monash:

  • Craig Rowe, an experienced counsellor, is available on a daily basis from 8AM to 1PM.
  • Mae Barrington, Chief Psychiatric Nurse and head of the Mental Health Clinic at Discovery Hospital, is available on Wednesdays from 12PM to 4PM.
  • A network with the Police Trauma Debriefing Centre on the West Rand has been set up, as well as with SANCA, which relates to substance abuse.

Testing

This service offers educational, vocational and psychological testing, which is available for students and staff on a fee-for-service basis, and written educational, vocational and court reports and provided on request.

Debra Cairns, a psychologist, offers individual personality assessments, which include cognitive strengths and weaknesses, interests, personality profiles and a written report and face-to-face feedback. Please ensure that you make an appointment and the relevant contact information is available from the Community Services Officer.
