International Student Experience - Agung and Salimah

This program is really great as it gives me the opportunities to know about Australia's culture better. I got the feel of truly living in Oz as I am really involved in Australian community not just the international student community that I have in campus. I know more and more Australian slang words now. I just realize that Victoria is a beautiful place to see and to live in. I do have a balanced life of studying and having a great time in Victoria.

We have been to some great places and both enjoy our friendship with our volunteer, Tricia and her family. They are really nice family.

What you and Michelle do together?

I am very happy to have been matched with my volunteer, Michelle.  We play squash together and she has invited me to enjoy dinner with her family, we catch up on campus, have lunch together, have been to a BBQ  and karaoke.

What you like most when spending time with Michelle?

In the time I have spent with Michelle I like most talking to her, she is a very interesting person and has taught me a lot about  how to survive in Australia.

What you think you have gained from your friendship?

I have  learnt a lot about Australian culture, Michelle explains anything i don't understand or any word I don't know. For example her family explained why the cricket game is called "ashes to ashes". Also, my English skills have improved very fast

What you and Xiaofan do together?

We've done quite a range of things! We've played squash a few times, we've been to a Bible study together, and we went to the Cup Day BBQ at Monash. Fran has also come over for a BBQ with my family and some friends, and for Christmas lunch, which was fun (and cold!)

What you like most when spending time with Xiaofan?

How relaxed and easy it is to just be friends. Renee and the team have been really supportive and helpful, and I don't feel any pressure to be a tourist guide or any other sort of guide - I really am just someone who happens to have lived in Melbourne for a few years longer than Fran, and might therefore know more about how certain things work.

What you think you have gained from your friendship?

I've gained a greater understanding of Monash College and of the challenges international students face when coming to Australia. I've also learnt lots about China, and I've gained a thoughtful, loyal friend!
