Get Up and Go – a walking buddy program

About the program

Get Up and Go, a program developed by Health Wellbeing and Development and Monash Sport, aims to encourage walking by pairing volunteers together.

You can register as a ‘walker’ or ‘walkee’. Participants are required to go for a 30-minute walk at least once a week.

The benefits of walking

A 30-minute walk has great health benefits including

  • physical health improvement
  • disease prevention
  • significant improvement to mental health, helping to reduce depression and anxiety
  • positive impact on mood
  • increased energy
  • improved sleep
  • weight loss
  • improved study and concentration
  • an opportunity for social interaction

Who can participate?

Caulfield students and staff (this pilot program may be extended to other campuses)

Role of Walker

A ‘walker’ is someone who motivates the walkee to go for at least one walk a week. You don’t have to be super fit to be a walker, you just need to motivate the walkee to join you for a walk!

Role of Walkee

A ‘walkee’ is someone who may need encouragement to go for regular walks and so teams up with a walker.

Training

Training is provided so all participants are aware of the guidelines of the program. People are paired according to suitability and will receive ongoing support. You will need to attend a 30 minute information session on Wednesday 16th September where you will receive a free starter pack and a light lunch.

Start date

The program commences Wednesday September 16th 2009 and runs for 5 weeks.
