Existing University Policy - Conditions for Monash University Boiler House 12 Hour Shift for Engineering Services Officers (ESOs)

1. Shifts and Allowances

1.1 "12 hour shift" means a shift of 12 hours' duration, with ordinary hours worked 7:00am to 7:00pm on a day shift or 7:00pm to 7:00am on a night shift. The shift roster of work is based around regular shifts of twelve hours paid at ordinary rates, and will provide for Utility days of 7.5 hours or Rostered Days Off (RDOs).

1.2 "Standby shifts" are those days where the designated shifts will nominate an ESO to be available to cover any unexpected absence due to the failure of an ESO to report to work as rostered.  The ESO on "standby" is required to respond to a telephone call, taxi visit or other means of contact between 6.30 and 7.30 morning or evening, as is appropriate. This does not preclude the University from attempting to contact an ESOoutside these hours.  A "standby" allowance equal to the rate for 3.38 hours per week willbe paid to any ESO on the roster.

1.3 If called in to do a "standby shift", the ESO willreceive full payment for the extra shift worked including overtime payments.

1.4 Shift allowance will be paid in accordance with the Monash University Enterprise Agreement (Academic and General Staff) 2005.

2. Overtime

2.1 All overtime payments will be paid at double time and a maximum of 4 hours' overtime may be worked before or after a 12 hour shift.  ESOs will receive a minimum 10-hour break between shifts.

2.2 Meal allowances will only be payable for overtime worked and not during a rostered 12-hour shift.

3. Leave

3.1 All leave taken or accrued will be converted into an equivalent number of 12-hour shifts.
