Semester and Vacation Dates 2009 - 2015

For First Year Students, the academic year begins at the commencement of Orientation Week.

Monash University follows the Universities Australia methodology for determining Week 1 of the academic year, based on Week 1 being counted from the Monday nearest 1 March. Similarly, Monash University observes the Universities Australia allocation principle for common vacation dates, with the common vacation weeks being:

• the week beginning with Easter Monday;
• week 19; and
• week 31.

Monash also observes the following events and protocols in constructing a calendar based on the Universities Australia approach:

• Orientation Week occurs prior to the commencement of Semester 1 and Semester 2
• Semesters 1 and 2 each have 12-week teaching periods (from 2011)
• Semesters 1 and 2 each have a five-day Swot Vac before examinations commence (from 2011)
• Semesters 1 and 2 each have a three-week Examination period (from 2011)
