2.2 Motion of Appreciation
The Pro Vice-Chancellor (Gippsland) was thanked for the invitation which led to the useful and interesting visit of the Academic Board to the Gippsland Campus last month; and special appreciation was expressed to staff for their painstaking and efficient organisation of the meeting and of transport.

A question was asked about a paper tabled at the previous meeting under item 5.2 (p 1126). The query related to the quality of citations. In response the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development) said that despite its idiosyncracies and limitations, the ISI database was useful to establish evidence of the publication record of Monash staff.

Professor R. Anderson's departure from the University had left a vacancy on the Committee.

A document had been circulated (p1142).
Professor Pargetter explained that the new version of the paper detailing the University's Academic Structure had been compiled from information supplied by faculties. He agreed to add to it all companies owned by the University, and invited members to notify him of any additions or omissions. It was agreed that the list of the University's affiliations being compiled by the Council's Affiliations Committee would be submitted separately to the Board for information.

*4.6 Staff Career Development
The Deputy Vice-Chancellor reminded the Board that an early version of the paper on academic staff development had been circulated at Meeting 3/94 under item 4.6. He outlined the background to the work on staff appraisal at Monash and advised members that the current version, circulated on the day prior to the Meeting, was the result of comments received and consultation with union representatives (p1549).
Professor Chubb summarised the two-part approach covered in the document and commended it to members.
The Academic Board endorsed the document titled "Academic Staff Professor Chubb Career Development and Supervision", subject to amendments, and noting that more work was to be carried out on detailing responsibilities of heads of departments, and on the review process referred to in 7.6.3.8.

The Academic Board approved the proposal to establish a new major Secretary and minor sequence in the Bachelor of Arts, titled English in Use: A Second Language Perspective.
12.2.4 Bachelor of Performing Arts
The Academic Board approved the proposal to establish a new Secretary course, Bachelor of Performing Arts, subject to the requirement that there be an option to take a minor sequence elsewhere in the Faculty or in another Faculty. In addition the Academic Board noted that no provision should be made for an honours year until a separate proposal for that degree is received.
12.2.5 New Stream in Music Performance for Master of Arts
The Academic Board approved the proposal to establish a new Secretary stream, Music Performance, in the Master of Arts.

12.4.1 Change to Course Title
The Academic Board approved the proposal to rename the Bachelor Secretary of Computing (Digital Technology) as Bachelor of Digital Systems; and that the Digital Technology stream of the honours degree of Bachelor of Computing be given an individual title, that being the honours degree of Bachelor of Digital Systems.
