Memorandum to: Professor R.J. Pargetter

Deputy Vice-Chancellor

Committee of Deans

The following extracts from the unconfirmed minutes of Meeting No. 4/92 of the Committee of Deans, held on 23 April are drawn to your attention:

31.2 Berwick (4)

Professor Pargetter briefed Deans on what was (and what was not) happening in regard to the establishment of a new campus in the south-eastern growth corridor. It was agreed that it would be useful for a paper to be submitted to the next meeting of the Academic Board giving a background to the new campus proposal, its underlying rationale, and the conditions under which the University had agreed to become involved.

33. Continuing/Non-Continuing Academic Appointments

The meeting discussed a paper tabled by Professor Pargetter addressing yet again the University's attempt to comply with the 1991 Academic Award Restructuring Agreement to achieve a more even spread of continuing and non-continuing academic staff appointments. Professor Pargetter said he was aiming, within the spirit of the agreement, to arrive at procedures that would see `good people given a go' at the expense of less acceptable `time servers'.

He gave notice of a revised version of this paper that, he said, would be sent by facsimile to Deans as soon as it was available.

Professor T. Kennedy

The following extract from the unconfirmed minutes of Meeting No. 4/92 of the Committee of Deans, held on 23 April 1992 is drawn to your attention:

31.4 Meeting of PVC's Research (6)

Deans received and noted a report submitted by Professor Porter on a meeting of Deputy and Pro-Vice-Chancellors (Research) held in Canberra on 9-10 April. He said many of the matters listed therein would need to be taken up and considered in detail by CADRES.

Professor Porter also tabled a paper comprising his best attempt at listing all University centres and the like. He asked Deans to check the entries for their faculties and notify him of any necessary amendments. It was agreed that this listing would be more useful if entries were classified as being centres of the University, faculty, or department.
