Meeting 7/97 of the Committee of Deans was held at 2.15 pm on Tuesday, 17
June 1997 in the Sir George Lush Room, Ground Floor, University Offices

MINUTES
1. Attendance and apologies
Apologies were received from Professors Maloney, Porter and Davies.
Professor Stella Crossley attended for Professor R W Davies, Dean,
Faculty of Science.
Members of the Corporate Planning Group had been invited to attend.
2. Minutes
The minutes of meeting 6/97 were confirmed subject to the addition of the
following dot point to item 4.1.1.
The Dean of Arts was asked to supply a list of intercultural and language
subjects which might support the proposal in the Monash Plan to
internationalise all award programs.
3. Matters arising from the minutes not dealt with elsewhere in the
agenda
3.1 Intercultural and Language Subjects
A document titled Intercultural and Language Subjects to Support
Professional Courses was circulated at the meeting.
During a short discussion, it was emphasised that the document was a
preliminary subject list and that Deans could contact the Dean of Arts for
more detailed discussions. Proposals to progress issues further should be
referred to Professor Lindsay, Deputy Vice-Chancellor - Academic & Planning.
4. Vice-Chancellor's business
4.1 Vice-Chancellor
4.1.1 Monash Plan - update
Professor Robinson opened up discussion on the issue by advising the
Committee that the document was constantly undergoing enhancement due to the
initiation of a wide-ranging consultation process.
During extensive discussion of the Monash Plan, suggestions for improving
the document were noted for incorporation in the next iteration of the
Monash Plan.
4.1.2 DEETYA Planned Undergraduate Load
Ms Deborah Lampard introduced the topic by explaining that the item would
be better titled 'Campus & Educational Profiles'.
The following papers were circulated to members:
Campus Load (EFTSU)
Educational Profiles Data Collection
Capital Management Plan
Ms Lampard gave a detailed explanation of each document before the
subject was opened up for discussion.
Members engaged in discussion of a wide range of issues relating to the
documents and their impact on the formulation of the Monash Plan. Deans were
requested to liaise with Ms Lampard on any issue requiring
clarification/correction so that further input to the Monash Plan and DEETYA
Profiles could be finalised.
4.2 Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development)
4.2.1 Publications Data
Professor Darvall advised the Committee that he had requested Dr T
Stokes, Director - Research Services Division, to visit each faculty and
provide appropriate assistance as required.
4.2.2 Enterprise Bargaining
The Committee was given an overview of the current status of negotiations
with the NTEU. Deans were advised that the University had yet to reach an
agreement with the NTEU and that the union may initiate industrial action
during the current round of examinations.
4.3 Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International and Public Affairs)
4.4 Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Planning)
Professor Lindsay advised the Committee that a lengthy document relating
to Open Learning had been sent to all Deans. Due to the short lead time
available to finalise the document, Professor Lindsay requested that
responses to the document be sent to his office by the following day.
4.5 General Manager
4.5.1 Teaching Space Survey
Mr Wade advised the Committee that Mr J Trembath, Director - Facilities &
Services Division, was undertaking a survey of teaching space across all
campuses and may need to contact faculty offices and/or Deans.
4.5.2 National Competition Policy
Mr Wade advised the Committee that a Trade Practices Compliance Manual
was being compiled and that it would be made available to all staff via the
a Monash Web page.

The next scheduled Committee of Deans meeting will be held on Tuesday, 8
July 1997 at 2.15 pm in the Sir George Lush Room.
