1. MINUTES

The Minutes of Meeting No 4/94 held on Friday 1 July 1994 have been circulated.

Recommendation:

That the Committee approve the minutes as circulated.

2. MATTERS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES

2.1 Graduate Studies Sub-committee

Regarding Minutes 3.1 Meeting 4/94, 2.1 Meeting 3/94, 2.2 Meeting 2/94 and 12 Meeting 1/94: the Sub-Committee will meet again on Tuesday 23 August 1994.

Recommendation:

That the Committee note the information.

2.2 Academic Board approval of subjects

Regarding Minutes 3.4, Meeting 4/94 and 8.5, Meeting 3/94: a paper has been prepared and is with the University Solicitor for comment.

Recommendation:

That the Committee note the information.

2.3 Fees for Subjects Taken Over and Above Degree Requirements

Regarding Minutes 3.5, Meeting 4/94 and 9.5, Meeting 3/94: Faculties have been requested to provide their current fee policies to the Executive Officer.

2.4 University Entry via Non-Credit Courses

Regarding Minutes 3.6, Meeting 4/94 and 11, Meeting 3/94: the item will be brought to the next meeting of the Education Committee. The Committee may like to note the paper presented on page 1133 of Academic Board Agenda 5/94.

2.5 Academic Medals

Regarding Minutes 3.7, Meeting 4/94 and 13, Meeting 3/94: the policies of other Universities around Australia are being used as the basis of a paper outlining options for a Valedictory ceremony and Academic Medals.

That the Committee note the information.

2.6 Discipline Working Party

Regarding Minutes 5, Meeting 4/94 and 4, Meeting 2/94: the item will be brought to the next meeting of the Education Committee.

2.7 Double Degree Funding

Regarding Minute 7, Meeting 4/94: the Chairman will address the item.

2.8 Year Level Standards and Assessment Policies

Regarding Minute 9.1, Meeting 4/94: the item will be brought to the next meeting of the Education Committee.

2.9 Conventions in Naming Degrees

Regarding Minute 11.1.12, Meeting 4/94: The item will be referred to a later meeting of the Education Committee.

3. HONOURS WORKING PARTY p 1910A

The Honours Working Party will meet on Monday 15 August 1994. The attached paper suggests items for discussion at that meeting. Additional suggestions for discussion will be welcomed by the working party.

Professor M King, as Chair of the working party, suggested the inclusion of a staff member from the Sciences on the working party, and Associate Professor N Hallam has been nominated to fill that position.

Recommendation:

That the Committee discuss the topics to be considered by the working party, and note the addition to the membership.

4. MINOR SEQUENCE PROPOSAL

Professor Bellamy has been preparing a paper concerning the possibility of a minor sequence to be taken from outside the degree Faculty in all Monash undergraduate degree courses. He will present a verbal report to the Committee.

Recommendation:

That the Committee receive Professor Bellamy's verbal report.

5. FACULTY OF ARTS REPORT (ATTACHED) p 1911

A preliminary Report from Faculty Board Meeting 4/94 held on 27 July 1994.

Recommendation:

That the Committee receive the report and consider the comments made by the Executive Committee when evaluating the course proposals listed in Items 5.1 and 5.2.

5.1 Graduate Diploma in Foreign Affairs and Trade p 1913

This new course is proposed in response to Monash University's successful tender to teach programs in Foreign Affairs and Trade for the Department of Foreign Affairs. The program will be taught entirely in Canberra.

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to establish a new course, to be titled Graduate Diploma in Foreign Affairs and Trade, to be offered at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra.

5.2 Master of Foreign Affairs and Trade p 1913

This new course is proposed in response to Monash University's successful tender to teach programs in Foreign Affairs and Trade for the Department of Foreign Affairs. The program will be taught entirely in Canberra.

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to establish a new course, to be titled Master of Foreign Affairs and Trade, to be offered at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra.

6. FACULTY OF MEDICINE REPORT (ATTACHED) p 1933

At Meeting 4/94 of the Faculty Board held on 29 June 1994, the Faculty proposed amendments to the structure of the Master of Public Health to allow for updating and expanding the course content and to provide greater ease of entry to membership in the recently established professional organisation. Other changes proposed include an increase in the maximum time period for completion of the degree, alterations to the core requirements for the degree and to subject titles and credit point allocations.

6.1 Streams to be permitted within the MPH

6.1.2 Occupational/Environmental Health p 1948

6.1.3 General p 1948

6.1.4 Coursework and Minor Thesis p 1935, 1952

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to amend the existing Master of Public Health, and to allow for the four specific streams listed in items 6.1.1 to 6.1.4 inclusive.

6.2 New subject proposals for the MPH

6.2.1 MPHxxxx Sociological Foundations of Public Health p 1939

6.2.2 MPHxxxx Health Economics, Management and Evaluation p 1941

6.2.3 MPHxxxx Epidemiology and Demography p 1943

6.2.4 MPHxxxx Introductory Statistics p 1945

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the subject proposals listed in items 6.2.1 to 6.2.4 inclusive.

6.3 Amendments to existing subjects for the MPH p 1947

6.3.1 Change the title of MPH2013 Epidemiological Research Methods to become MPH2013 Research Methods and Computing

6.3.2 Change the title of MPH1003 Environmental and Communicable Hazards to become MPH1003 Environmental Influences on Health

6.3.3 Change the title of MPH1016 Health Promotion and Illness Prevention to become MPH1016 Health Promotion

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposals to alter the titles of existing subjects listed in items 6.3.1 to 6.3.3 inclusive.

6.3.4 That MPH2031 Public Health Policy and Planning will become a core subject rather than an elective.

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the requirement that MPH2031 Public Health Policy and Planning be a compulsory subject in the second year of the Master of Public Health.

7. FACULTY OF SCIENCE REPORT (ATTACHED) p 1957

Report of Faculty Board Meeting 4/94 held on 27 July 1994.

7.1 Restructure of Master of Science regulations p 1957

The Faculty proposes a restructuring of the Master of Science degree regulations such that there will be offered a Master of Science Part I and Part II in place of the existing Master of Science preliminary and full candidature.

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the amendment to the Master of Science degree regulations such that there will be offered a Master of Science Part I and Part II in place of the existing Master of Science preliminary and full candidature.

7.2 Amendments to the Schedule to the BSc Regulations p 1959

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to amend the First Schedule to the Bachelor of Science Regulations by deleting GES2211.08, GES2392.08 and GES3392.12, and adding GES3360.12.

7. REPORT OF THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN

The University Librarian has been asked to provide a report for each meeting of the Education Committee, concerning the impact on the Libraries of changes to the offerings of the University. The first report should be presented to the next meeting of the Education Committee.

Recommendation:

That the Committee note the information.

8. REPORT OF THE COMPUTER CENTRE

The Computer Centre has been asked to provide a report for each meeting of the Education Committee, concerning the impact on the Computer Centre facilities of changes to the offerings of the University. The first report should be presented to the next meeting of the Education Committee.

That the Committee note the information.
