AGENDA

1. MEMBERSHIP

Ms Anne McMillan joins the Education Committee, replacing Professor Cliff Bellamy as the representative of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology.

Recommendation:

That the Committee welcome Ms McMillan.

2. GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR SCHEDULING NEW COURSES

The Chair will table a short paper outlining future scheduling and process arrangements for new undergraduate courses. Some aspects of these arrangements will apply to courses introduced for 1996.

Recommendation:

That the Committee approve these arrangements.

3. FACULTY COURSE APPROVALS FOR 1996

Attached are the relevant sections from Faculty Board meetings held by the Faculties of Arts, Business and Economics, Computing and Information Technology and Engineering relating to the courses which were granted "in principle" approval at Academic Board Meeting 3/95 on 26 April 1995. An additional report from the Faculty of Business and Economics will be tabled at this time, as will further information from the Faculty of Arts and the Berwick Academic Group. The Faculty of Arts has submitted two additional papers from their Committee for Undergraduate Studies which should also be noted by the Committee and which are included here.

Recommendation:

That the Committee note the statements of the faculties concerned.

4. COURSE APPROVALS FOR 1996

4.1 Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Computing

The Board of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology has approved this combination of courses. The Board of the Faculty of Business and Economics was to consider this proposal at its meeting on 28 April. Documentation is attached.

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to establish a new course, to be titled Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Computing.

4.2 Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Computing

The Boards of the Faculties of Arts and Computing and Information Technology have approved this combination of courses. Documentation is attached.

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to establish a new course, to be titled Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Computing.

4.3 Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Information Management

The Board of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology has approved this combination of courses. The course proposal and approval documentation will be tabled by the Faculty of Arts.

Recommendation:

That the Committee examine the documentation provided, and consider whether to endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to establish a new course, to be titled Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Information Management.

4.4 Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Business

This course has previously been offered only to later year students, who have been permitted to transfer into the course after first year studies. The Board of the Faculty of Engineering has approved this amendment to an existing course, which will result in a new entry for the VTAC Guide for 1996. Documentation is attached.

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to allow students to enter the Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Engineering at Gippsland campus from level one rather than a later stage (as was previously the case).

4.5 Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Communication

The Board of the Faculty of Business and Economics has made no recommendation concerning this proposal. No documentation has been submitted.

Recommendation:

That the Committee consider any additional documentation which may be submitted before making a determination regarding this degree, bearing in mind that it may be unable to approve a course proposal for which there is inadequate documentation.

4.6 Bachelor of Arts (Psychology and Humanities)/Bachelor of Social Welfare

The Board of the Faculty of Arts has made no recommendation concerning this proposal. No documentation has been submitted.

Recommendation:

That the Committee consider any additional documentation which may be submitted before making a determination regarding this degree, bearing in mind that it may be unable to approve a course proposal for which there is inadequate documentation.

4.7 Bachelor of Tourism

No documentation has been submitted, but it is hoped that documentation for this course proposal will be circulated to members by Tuesday 2 May.

Recommendation:

That the Committee consider any additional documentation which may be submitted before making a determination regarding this degree, bearing in mind that it may be unable to approve a course proposal for which there is inadequate documentation.

4.8 Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Tourism

No documentation has been submitted, but it is hoped that documentation for this course proposal will be circulated to members by Tuesday 2 May.

That the Committee consider any additional documentation which may be submitted before making a determination regarding this degree, bearing in mind that it may be unable to approve a course proposal for which there is inadequate documentation.

4.11 Bachelor of Tourism/Associate Diploma of Business (Marketing)

No documentation has been submitted, but it is hoped that documentation for this course proposal will be circulated to members by Tuesday 2 May.

That the Committee consider any additional documentation which may be submitted before making a determination regarding this degree, bearing in mind that it may be unable to approve a course proposal for which there is inadequate documentation.

4.12 Bachelor of Arts (Languages)

This course proposal, which is a repackaging of existing streams and subjects, has been approved by the Board of the Faculty of Arts. Documentation is attached.

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to establish a new course, to be titled Bachelor of Arts (Languages).

4.13 Bachelor of Arts (Asian Studies)

This course has previously been offered only to later year students, who have been permitted to transfer into the course after first year studies. The Board of the Faculty of Arts has approved this amendment to an existing course, which will result in a new entry for the VTAC Guide for 1996. Documentation is attached.

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to allow students to enter the Bachelor of Arts (Asian Studies) from level one rather than a later stage (as was previously the case).

4.14 Bachelor of Arts (Australian Studies)

This course has previously been offered only to later year students, who have been permitted to transfer into the course after first year studies. 4.17 Bachelor Of Arts (Journalism)

This course has previously been offered to students as the Bachelor of Arts (Journalism and Communication). The Board of the Faculty of Arts has approved a split in the course previously offered, resulting in the existing course being renamed Bachelor of Arts(Journalism). Documentation is attached.

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to rename the Bachelor of Arts (Journalism and Communication) as Bachelor of Arts (Journalism).

4.18 Bachelor of Arts (Communication)

The Board of the Faculty of Arts has approved this course proposal. Documentation is attached.

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to establish a new course, to be titled Bachelor of Arts (Communication).

4.19 Bachelor of Arts (Communication)/Associate Diploma of Business (Tourism)

The Board of the Faculty of Arts has approved this course proposal, to be offered in conjunction with Casey College of TAFE. Documentation is attached.

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to establish a new course, to be titled Bachelor of Arts (Communication)/ Associate Diploma of Business (Tourism).

4.20 Bachelor of Arts (Communication)/Associate Diploma of Business (Marketing)

The Board of the Faculty of Arts has approved this course proposal, to be offered in conjunction with Casey College of TAFE. Documentation is attached.

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to establish a new course, to be titled Bachelor of Arts (Communication)/ Associate Diploma of Business (Marketing).

4.21 Bachelor of Arts (Communication)/Associate Diploma of Arts (Professional Writing and Editing)

The Board of the Faculty of Arts has approved this course proposal, to be offered in conjunction with Casey College of TAFE. Documentation is attached.

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to establish a new course, to be titled Bachelor of Arts (Communication)/ Associate Diploma of Arts (Professional Writing and Editing).

4.22 Bachelor of Arts (Communication)/Bachelor of Computing

4.23 Bachelor of Business/Associate Diploma of Business (Office Administration)

The Board of the Faculty of Business and Economics has approved this course proposal, to be offered in conjunction with Casey College of TAFE. Documentation is attached.

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to establish a new course, to be titled Bachelor of Business/Associate Diploma of Business (Office Administration).

4.24 Bachelor of Business/Associate Diploma of Business (Accounting)

The Board of the Faculty of Business and Economics has approved this course proposal, to be offered in conjunction with Casey College of TAFE. Documentation is attached.

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to establish a new course, to be titled Bachelor of Business/Associate Diploma of Business (Accounting).

4.25 Bachelor of Business/Associate Diploma of Business (Hospitality Supervision)

The Board of the Faculty of Business and Economics has made no recommendation concerning this proposal. No documentation has been submitted.

4.27 Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Engineering

The Board of the Faculty of Engineering has approved this proposal to allow students to complete a major sequence in the field of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, while pursuing a Bachelor of Arts. This will result in a new entry in the VTAC Guide for 1996.

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to allow students to enrol in the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Engineering and complete a major sequence in Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering.

4.28 Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Engineering

The Board of the Faculty of Engineering has approved this proposal to allow students to complete a major sequence in the field of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, while pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce. This will result in a new entry in the VTAC Guide for 1996.

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to allow students to enrol in the Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Engineering and complete a major sequence in Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering.

4.29 Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Laws

The Board of the Faculty of Engineering has approved this proposal to allow students to complete a major sequence in the field of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, while pursuing a Bachelor of Laws. This will result in a new entry in the VTAC Guide for 1996.

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to allow students to enrol in the Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Laws and complete a major sequence in Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering.

4.30 Bachelor of Teaching (Primary)/Bachelor of Computing

This proposal was withdrawn by the Dean of the Faculty of Education at Academic Board Meeting 3/95, held on 26 April 1995.

Recommendation:

That the Committee note the information.

4.31 Bachelor of Arts (Journalism)/Bachelor of Arts (Visual Arts)

The Dean of the Faculty of Arts has withdrawn this proposal.

Recommendation:

That the Committee note the information.
