AGENDA

1. STARRED ITEMS

The Committee should note that certain items have been starred as requiring discussion. Additional items may be starred at the discretion of the Committee.

Recommendation:

That the Committee nominate any additional items to be starred, and then endorse the recommendations for items other than those starred.

2. MINUTES

The Minutes of Meeting 3/95 held on Wednesday 17 May 1995 have been circulated.

Recommendation:

That the Committee approve the minutes of Meeting 3/95 as circulated.

3. MEMBERSHIP

At Meeting 10/93 of the Academic Board, held on 17 November 1993, the Terms of Reference for the Education Committee were approved. An amendment to the membership is proposed.

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to amend the membership of the Education Committee by requiring that the Associate Dean (Teaching) of each faculty, or their equivalent, be the representative of that faculty on the Education Committee; and that the membership include the Head of each Subfaculty, or their nominee.

4. MATTERS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES

4.1 Academic Board approval of subjects

The University Solicitor's Office has prepared a response to the request of the University Secretariat for clarification regarding course and subject approvals procedures. The initial request for information, the University Solicitor's response and the Reporting Guidelines for the Education Committee are attached.

4.2 Compliance with the policy for naming undergraduate degrees developed in 1994

Regarding Item 3.3.1 Meeting 3/95: The summary of compliance with the policy developed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and approved by the Academic Board will be brought to a later meeting, and will include information from Student Services regarding current practices regarding testamur printing.

Recommendation:

That the Committee note the information.

4.3 Marking and Selection Practices

Regarding Minute 3.4 Meeting 3/95: Dr Baldwin will submit the requested descriptive paper concerning marking practices to the Committee at a later date.

Recommendation:

That the Committee note the information.

4.4 Discipline Working Party

The Working Party on Student Discipline has been disbanded (see attached memorandum) in favour of asking Ms S Bath, Policy and Legal Counsel, to prepare a draft revised statute. Ms Bath has been asked to consult with the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Associate Professor S McNicol and Professor M King, in addition to any other persons for whom the discipline statute has major implications. The draft statute will be presented to the Committee of Deans for discussion.

That the Committee note the information.

5. IMPLEMENTATION OF THE EDUCATION POLICY

Attached are the responses of the Faculties of Computing and Information Technology, Education and Medicine and the Subfaculty of Nursing to the document prepared by Dr Baldwin regarding the current status of implementation of Education Policy initiatives.

Recommendation:

That the Committee note the responses of the Faculties of Computing and Information Technology, Education and Medicine and the Subfaculty of Nursing to Dr Baldwin's paper concerning the current status of implementation of Education Policy initiatives, and request responses from those faculties which have yet to reply.

6. ROLE OF ASSOCIATE DEANS (TEACHING)

Information which will be provided to the Academic Board (as part of the Report of the Committee of Deans) regarding the role of the Associate Deans (Teaching) is attached.

Recommendation:

That the Committee discuss the implications of this report.

7. REPORT OF THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN

The University Librarian has not submitted a report to this meeting.

8.1 New Subject Proposals

The Faculty of Science has proposed a number of new subjects to be offered within their degree programs. These new subjects are all based on currently offered subjects, but are smaller in scope and therefore in credit points than their predecessors. The Faculty is progressively moving towards the offering of smaller size subjects, in order to increase the flexibility for students in the Bachelor of Science, the designated entry degrees and other degrees of the University.

10.1.1 Diploma of General Studies

The Board of the Faculty of Arts has approved this proposal to provide an additional award for those studying through Open Learning. This award will be available by registration only.

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to establish a new course, to be titled Diploma of General Studies.

10.1.2 Advanced Diploma of General Studies

The Board of the Faculty of Arts has approved this proposal to provide an additional award for those studying through Open Learning. This award will be available by registration only.

10.2 Amendments to courses

The Faculty Board of the Faculty of Arts endorsed amendments to the structure of courses at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences (Gippsland), primarily to support changing the credit point values of subjects from six (6) points to eight (8) points. Items 10.2.1 to 10.2.13 are concerned with this change.

Recommendation:

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to establish a new course, to be titled Bachelor of Business (Accounting)/Bachelor of Business (Management).

11.1.3 Graduate Certificate of Business (Management)

The Faculty also proposes to offer an Executive Certificate of Business (Management) as a short course, which varies from this proposal only in its admission requirements (See also item 11.2.1 of this Agenda).

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to establish a new course, to be titled Graduate Certificate of Business (Management), and note the introduction of a short course Executive Certificate of Business (Management).

11.2 Amendments to courses

11.2.1 Graduate Diploma Graduate Certificate courses and Executive Certificate courses - Admission

11.2.2 Bachelor of Business - all disciplines

As a result of a recent review of the core component of the various Bachelor of Business degree programs, a number of amendments have been suggested, including deletion of a number of subjects, inclusion of new subjects, and an amendment to an existing subject code.

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the amendments to the core course, as detailed in the document presented, for the following degree programs:

11.2.3 Bachelor of Commerce - Management stream and Bachelor of Commerce (Strategic Management)

Specific amendments have been requested to the Bachelor of Commerce - Management stream and Bachelor of Commerce (Strategic Management) degree programs, including changes to compulsory first year subjects, changes to pre-requisite requirements and restructuring of a number of subjects.

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the amendments to the Bachelor of Commerce - Management Stream and Bachelor of Commerce (Strategic Management) as detailed in the document presented.

11.2.4 Bachelor of Commerce - Category C Electives

Recommendation:

That the Committee endorse for transmission to the Academic Board the proposal to amend the definition of Category C subjects in all Bachelor of Commerce regulations to include subjects from campuses of the Faculty of Business and Economics other than Clayton as detailed in the document presented.
