Recommendation:

3. MATTERS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES

3.1 Revised Discipline Statute and Guidelines

A document is attached.

At Meeting 2/98 the Committee considered the revised Statute 4.1 - Discipline and the Guidelines for its implementation presented by the Deputy University Solicitor. The Committee suggested additional amendments to both the draft Statute and Guidelines. Input regarding the proposed revisions has, as agreed at Meeting 2/98, been sought from the Law Chairs. A note from the Deputy University Solicitor on progress to date is attached. A final Report will be submitted to Meeting 4/98.

Recommendation:

That the Committee note the information.

*4. REVISED REPORT OF THE CREDIT POINT WORKING PARTY P 443-447

The recommendations of Education Committee Meeting 2/98 were referred back from Academic Board Meeting 1/98 for further consideration in the light of a number of points raised by the Steering Committee of Academic Board. The Committee is invited to consider the Revised Report of the Working Party (attached) for transmission to Faculties for comment, prior to its re-submission to the Academic Board.

Recommendation:

That the Committee consider the revised Report in light of the comments made by the Steering Committee. Further that the Committee approve the document for circulation to Faculties for comment, prior to its re-submission to the Academic Board.

*5. A MINIMUM NUMBER OF POINTS TO CONSTITUTE A MAJOR SPECIALISATION

Background

An Extract from Council Meeting 3/96, Item 7.12 Recording of Specialisations on Degree Testamurs and/or Academic Transcripts, appears below.

At Meeting 3/96 Council approved the resolution that:

Faculties be permitted to make a case to the University Council should they wish to include the specialisation of the student in the wording of the official testamur for all students receiving a particular degree; and that prior to making such a case to Council, the faculty be required to define the administrative process which would be used to determine the specialisation proposed to be included. (CL3/96/143)

Establishment of a Required Minimum of Credit Points to Constitute a Major Specialisation

At Meeting 3/98, the Associate Deans (Teaching) agreed to recommend that 48 points be the required minimum number of credit points to constitute a major specialisation in an undergraduate degree course. Education Committee is invited to consider this recommendation.

Recommendation:

That the Committee note the Council resolution permitting a specialisation to be included on degree testamurs as detailed in the extract above. Further, that the Education Committee consider the recommendation of the Associate Deans (Teaching) that a 48 credit point minimum be required to constitute a major specialisation in an undergraduate degree course.

7.6 Credit Point Structure

The Board of the Faculty of Business and Economics has requested that the Committee note that, while it would support the adoption of a uniform 3, 6 and 12 credit point structure for undergraduate courses, it would not support this structure for graduate courses.

7.7 Unsatisfactory Progress and Exclusion

The Board of the Faculty of Business and Economics has recommended that a university-wide review on policy and processes regarding unsatisfactory progress and exclusion be conducted. Further, that the Committee note that the Faculty’s policy on unsatisfactory progress and exclusion.

Recommendation:

That the Committee note that the Board of the Faculty of Economics has recommended that a University-wide review on policy and processes regarding unsatisfactory progress be conducted. Further, that the Committee note the Faculty’s policy on unsatisfactory progress and exclusion as set out in the document presented.

Secretarial Note:

The matter of Faculty policies on unsatisfactory progress and exclusion was recently raised at the Committee of Associate Deans (Teaching). That Committee is making initial inquiries into the unsatisfactory progress and exclusion policies of individual Faculties, focussing on resolving difficulties arising in the context of double degree programs. Simultaneously, a review of the exclusion procedures within the University is currently being undertaken by the University Secretariat.

7.8 Tertiary Entrance Requirements for the Year 2001

The Board of the Faculty of Business and Economics has recommended that the Committee approve its proposed Faculty’s Tertiary Entrance Requirements for the year 2001, which are the same as for the year 2000, viz:

The VCE Units 3 and 4 prerequisites for the year 2001 are as follows:

For Berwick and Gippsland courses, English with a grade average of 25 plus two units of Mathematics (any) (at the Unit 1 and 2 level only). For courses at Caulfield and Peninsula, a grade average of 25 in both English and in Mathematics (any), and a grade average of 20 in any two other VCE studies. For Clayton, a grade average of 25 in the following: English and either Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics, and a grade average of 20 in any two other VCE studies. These prerequisites normally would be the minimum for all double degree courses of which these were a component.’

(note: C = 25, D = 20).

Recommendation:

That the Committee approve for submission to Academic Board the proposal of the Faculty of Business and Economics to adopt Faculty Tertiary Entrance Requirements for the year 2001, which are the same as for the year 2000, as set out in the excerpt above.

8. FACULTY OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

The Board of the Faculty of Science has proposed to establish a new Bachelor of Science (Resource Management)/Diploma in Natural Resource Management to be offered from Semester 1 1999 by flexible delivery. The course will be offered in conjunction with East Gippsland, Casey, Peninsula and Northern Melbourne Institutes of TAFE from Gippsland, Berwick and Peninsula Campuses.

12. MONASH MT ELIZA GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND GOVERNMENT LTD

*12.1 Major Amendment to the Master of Business Administration (Executive)

The Board of Monash Mt Eliza Graduate School of Business and Government Ltd (MBBS) has proposed amendments to the Master of Business Administration (Executive). In 1997 Council requested a review of the MBA (Executive) as part of the University’s quality assurance process. The course has been revised in response to the recommendations of a Review Committee and are aimed at aligning the MBA (Executive) with existing Monash University standards for degree programs.

Recommendation:

That the Education Committee endorse for submission to Academic Board the revised Master of Business Administration (Executive) as detailed in the document presented.

The next scheduled Meeting of the Education Committee will be held at 10.00 am on Wednesday 24 June 1998. Course and subject proposal submissions for that Meeting are due on or before WEDNESDAY 27 MAY 1998 full Reports are due on or before Friday 12 June 1998.

It is very important that all final submissions include a Report or draft Report from the Faculty Board. Submissions must be electronically submitted. Hard copies should also be submitted for our records. Please DO NOT staple or submit double-sided hard copies.
