3. ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM MEETING 4/98 OF THE ACADEMIC BOARD

Academic Board conditionally approved the proposal of the Faculty of Science to offer the Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology) and the Bachelor of Science (Resource Management) from Semester 2 1998 at the Sunway Campus, subject to the endorsement of Education Committee. All other proposals were approved or noted by the Board as recommended by Education Committee.
Recommendation
That the Committee note that Academic Board conditionally approved the proposal of the Faculty of Science to offer the Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology) and the Bachelor of Science (Resource Management) at the Sunway Campus, commencing in Semester 2 1998, subject to the endorsement of Education Committee.
*4. REVISED DISCIPLINE STATUTE AND GUIDELINES
A document is attached.
At meeting 2/98 the Committee considered a revision of Statute 4.1 Discipline and Guidelines presented by the Deputy University Solicitor. The Committee discussed ways by which appeals against decisions of faculty discipline committees might be limited. The Deputy University Solicitor agreed to seek in-put from the Law Chairs regarding a proposal that appeal applications be reviewed by the Chairs, who would have power to decline an appeal. Ms A Lazar will now report on the results of those deliberations and will present further revisions of the Statute and Guidelines for endorsement by the Committee and transmission to Academic Board.
Recommendation
That the Committee note the advice of the Deputy University Solicitor and endorse the revised Statute and Guidelines for transmission to Academic Board.
*5. COURSE AND SUBJECT APPROVALS POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
5.1 Flexible Learning: Policies and Procedures for Operationalising the Learning and Teaching Plan
Sections B2, B2.1, D7, D7.1, D7.2, D7.3 of the Learning and Teaching Operational Plan focus on issues connected with flexible learning, as detailed in the extracts below. The Committee is invited to review the proposed responsibilities and timelines set out in these sections in light of the increasing use of terminology associated with flexible learning in course and subject proposals. The Committee is also invited to consider interim procedures to address this trend and how these procedures might be implemented. The Chair will speak to these issues.

B2 Amend the Educational Policy and other related academic policies to reflect commitment to more student-centred flexible learning:
B2.1 Include relevant indicators for student-centred flexible learning as items in course and subject approval forms, and in terms of reference of academic reviews.
D7 Review and develop the Education and related academic policies:
D7.1 address implications and processes of flexible learning using educational technologies,
D7.2 ensure quality assurance for courses and subjects taught in flexible mode off-campus and off-shore,
D7.3 further refine and develop academic course and subject approval procedures and associated documentation in light of Learning and Teaching Plan requirements.
Recommendation:
That the Committee receive the advice of the Chair in relation to operationalising the Learning and Teaching Plan.
5.2 Report of the Procedures Review Working Party
The Academic Board Working Party established to review the operations of Academic Board recommended that Education Committee inter alia give consideration to streamlining the course and subject approval process and decision-making at Faculty level without compromising quality assurance measures. Accordingly, Education Committee established a Working Party to consider these matters. Since January 1998 the Working Party has held a number of meetings and given careful consideration to the full range of issues arising from the above-mentioned terms of reference.
Recommendation:
That Education Committee receive the Report of the Procedures Review Working Party and approve the recommendations as set out in the document presented.
*6. REVISED REPORT OF THE CREDIT POINT WORKING PARTY

At Meeting 3/98 the Committee considered the revised Report of the Credit Point Working Party. Members have now transmitted the Report to their respective Faculties for comment. Faculty input received has been incorporated into the final draft of the Report, which is attached. The Committee is invited to consider the Report and its recommendations for re-submission to Academic Board.

It is very important that all final submissions include a Report or draft Report from the Faculty Board. Submissions must be electronically submitted. Hard copies should also be submitted for our records. Please DO NOT staple or submit double-sided hard copies.
