The new subjects under this item are proposed by the School of Geography and Environmental Science, in the Faculty of Arts, due to a change to their credit point value from four to eight points. These six subjects were originally considered by the Education Committee at its Meeting 4/99. Discussion occurred at that meeting regarding assessment and workload and the Committee reasoned that at that time there was not a clear enough workload distinction between the six point Science Faculty versions and the proposed eight point Arts Faculty versions of the subjects. Education Committee recommended that the subjects be approved as six point subjects instead of eight points, particularly given the planned conversion to six points multiples for all subjects. The Committee requested that Associate Professor Garrioch forward a memorandum detailing the Faculty’s transition arrangements for those students who may be disadvantaged if the subjects were not offered at eight credit points in 2000.

Subsequent to Meeting 4/99, relevant documentation was received from Associate Professor D Garrioch, Associate Dean Teaching of the Faculty of Arts, and Associate Professor N Tapper, acting Head of the School of Geography and Environmental Science, which provided a detailed explanation of the Faculty’s rationale for offering the subjects at eight points in 2000, including clarification of the differences in assessment and workload between the Arts and Science versions of the subjects. That documentation is attached for the Committee’s information. At the Faculty’s request, the proposals for the six subjects have been returned to the Education Committee with the above-mentioned rationale for consideration and endorsement as eight point subjects for offer in 2000.

That, noting the documentation presented, Education Committee consider the six subjects below for endorsement as new subjects by virtue of a change to their credit point value from four to eight points:

The proposal under this item aims to bring consistency to the admission requirements for undergraduate Education courses. Currently English study scores and Mathematics requirements vary across the campuses on which the Faculty offers undergraduate courses.

That Education Committee endorse for submission to Academic Board the proposal of the Board of the Faculty of Education to amend the entrance requirements for undergraduate Education courses such that:

English/ESL, English Literature or English Language be accepted as meeting the requirements of English – units 3 & 4;

a study score of at least 25 in English (any) be a pre-requisite for entry into an Education undergraduate degree; and

the satisfactory completion of any unit 1 & 2 Mathematics sequence be a pre-requisite for all undergraduate programs offered by the Faculty.

That Education Committee receive the Report of a meeting of the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Engineering held 11 June 1999, and consider the item presented for submission to Academic Board.

At its Meeting 4/99, Education Committee approved amendments to the prescriptions for the second year level of the Bachelor of Engineering in the branches of Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management and Mechanical Engineering. Those changes introduced several alternative subjects and enabled students in certain circumstances to satisfy year level requirements by completion of either one of each pair of subjects.

The intention of the amendments was:

to provide opportunity for some rationalising of teaching at the Malaysian campus, where Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management, Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering are all being offered, but to relatively small numbers of students in the first instance; and

to provide additional timetable flexibility for students on the Victorian campuses who are undertaking mixed level studies.

It had been intended that similar arrangements be made for the Bachelor of Engineering in the branch of Mechatronics Engineering, however a proposal for this branch of Engineering had not been received at the time that that Faculty Board Report was presented to the Education Committee.

Recommendation:

That Education Committee endorse for submission to Academic Board the proposal of the Faculty of Engineering to amend the Bachelor of Engineering in the branch of Mechatronics Engineering, with effect from July 1999, to include alternative subjects as detailed in the document presented, to facilitate the offering of the branch of engineering in Malaysia, and to provide further flexibility in the delivery of the program at the Gippsland campus.

The Bachelor of Software Engineering (BSE) was originally jointly managed by the Faculties of Engineering and Information Technology. Recently the two faculties have reached an agreement whereby the BSE becomes the sole responsibility of the Faculty of Information Technology, and the Bachelor of Computer Systems Engineering (BCSE) becomes the responsibility of the Engineering faculty.

During the period of joint management of the BSE, a compromise situation meant that the degree incorporated much hardware related information that is now thought to be inappropriate. This proposal aims to re-structure the degree to incorporate much more Software Engineering related material.
