6. FINAL REPORT OF THE WORKING PARTY ON RANKING OF STUDENT RESULTS
p 1 - 2
The Working Party on Ranking of Student Results was established by the Education Committee at Meeting 3/99, to examine the possibility of providing ranking of student results in order to give employers, internal and external scholarship committees, other faculties and students themselves an idea of how students performed regardless of grades. Following consideration of the Working Partys interim report at Meeting 4/99, Education Committee endorsed the general directions being followed, however "encouraged the Working Party to research possibilities for the development of Callista so that a more automated, University-wide approach to the generation of reports for student ranking could be recommended".
The Final Report of the Working Party is now presented for consideration by the Committee.
Recommendation:
That the Committee consider and endorse the recommendations contained in the final report of the Working Party on Ranking of Student Results presented.
7. TAGGED COURSEWORK AWARD TITLES
p 3 - 10
Refer also to agenda item 12.3.
A proposal regarding the procedure for the "tagging" of coursework award titles is attached, which was prepared by Associate Professor P Gronn and Mr P Lawford of the Faculty of Education, and forwarded from the Board of the Faculty of Education.
Currently, tagged degrees are endorsed by the Education Committee and approved by the Academic Board as new courses. The attached proposal seeks to amend University procedure such that the approval of a tagged degree would be a major amendment to course. Major amendments to courses are also endorsed by the Education Committee and approved by Academic Board. However the approval of tags as major amendments would achieve two goals. Firstly, the approval of a major course amendment would acknowledge a tag as a variation on an existing degree rather than as a separate degree. Secondly, major course amendments require considerably less paperwork. In relation to Statute 6.1.2 Courses and Degrees, the particular degrees only would be listed, leaving the relevant faculty degree regulations to specify the tags / specialisations. An example of the proposed method of including tags for an award in faculty regulations is the "Faculty of Medicine regulations" for graduate diplomas in Nursing (also attached for reference).
Attached for information is a background paper with extracts from Academic Board minutes including the approved policies in relation to specialist degrees, the inclusion of specialisations on testamurs and the constitution of majors.
A related issue is the inclusion of specialisations on testamurs arising from an item at Education Committee Meeting 1/99. A memorandum from Professor M Evans and Mr R Burnet on this issue is attached for initial consideration.
In relation to the attached proposal from Education, consultation was sought with the Associate Chair of Academic Board, the Executive Officer Education Committee, the University Solicitors Office, and two members of staff involved with the development of Callista. Mr P Yates, Manager, Student Admissions and Records, Mr D Finlay, Change Manager, Students, IAS Project and Ms A Shelton, Assistant Solicitor, University Solicitors Office, have been invited to attend the meeting for this item.
Recommendation:
That Education Committee:
1. taking into account the approved policy in relation specialist degree titles, specialisations on testamurs and the constitution of majors, consider and endorse the proposal of the Board of the Faculty of Education to alter the University course approval process specifically in relation to tagged coursework award titles in the following manner:
Currently, tagged degrees are endorsed by the Education Committee and approved by the Academic Board as new courses. (Each variation on a degree title is recorded separately on the student system and under Statute 6.1.2 Courses and Degrees);
It is proposed that the Universitys current procedure be amended to allow faculties to establish tags for generically structured and approved degrees via a major course amendment.
2. give consideration to the attached memorandum from Professor M Evans and Mr B Burnet regarding the format for the inclusion of specialisations on testamurs, with the aim of resolving this issue by Meeting 7/99.
