Standing Committee on Ethics in Research Involving Humans
Committee Reporting to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Vice-President (Research)
Terms of Reference
In order to assist Monash University to conform with the requirements of the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Research Involving Humans, the Standing Committee on Ethics in Research Involving Humans shall:
- Consider research proposals involving humans emanating from or conducted by Monash University staff and students to determine whether or not they are acceptable on ethical grounds.
- Monitor approved projects until completion to ensure that they continue to comply with approved ethical standards, legislation, codes of practice and policies.
- Maintain records of all proposals which shall include the protocols of all proposals in the form in which they are approved.
- Liaise and cooperate with research funding agencies and national bodies.
- Formulate and review policies, guidelines and procedures relating to ethical matters and make recommendations to the Academic Board.
- Liaise with other relevant University committees, affiliated hospitals and the Research Grants and Ethics Branch.
- Act in a consultative and advisory capacity on ethical matters.
Proposals from non-affiliated researchers will only be accepted in exceptional circumstances. The Standing Committee on Ethics in Research Involving Humans will report to Academic Board annually through the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and will report on compliance to the National Health and Medical Research Council (NH & MRC) as required.
