What you need to know for your first dayWelcome to Monash University! There's always lots to deal with on the first day at a new job and we hope the information provided here will help get you through to your second day and is the start of a fulfilling employment experience. It will take a little time to settle in and feel comfortable so make sure that you don't try to do everything on the first day - you will be absorbing a great deal, meeting new people and learning new things in an unfamiliar environment. The induction aims to set you on the path to:
Making sure that we pay youIf you haven't already advised the University about your banking and tax details then getting this attended to quickly will ensure that you can be paid. Your work area needs to have sent the Confirmation of Commencement form before the Human Resources Division can start to pay you. Then you will have online access to your employment and pay details through the Employee Self Service (ESS) or eservices. For information on superannuation and other pay arrangements please visit the Human Resources and Staff forms pages. Getting your identity cardThe Monash staff card is your Staff Identification card, for identifying you as a staff member. It's essential for getting your 10% discount at the Bookshops, access to the library, sporting facilities and for security access in some areas. Staff Identification cards can be obtained by visiting any of the Student Services Centres located at Berwick, Caulfield, Gippsland, Peninsula or Parkville Campuses between the hours of 9.00am and 5.00pm to or by visiting Human Resources located in the Monash University Business Park, 710 Blackburn Road Clayton (across the road from the main Clayton campus) between the hours of 9.00am and 5.00pm on weekdays. You need to bring your letter of offer so that your employment can be confirmed. Your Staff Identification card will then be provided for you on the spot. Appointments are not required. Obtaining Monash AccountsYour departmental IT support should be able to provide you with a computer access form. If your department does not have local IT support, you can obtain the form from your nearest ITS Service Desk. With this form you may apply for all of the above accounts and others which may be relevant to your work, e.g.: Unix or Linux accounts. You must complete this form and have it signed by your supervisor or head of department. Return the form to your department's IT support person, or the nearest ITS Service Desk, who will use it to create an account name and enable access to the computers for which you have approval. Time for a break - Cafes and ShopsBy now you will be ready for a break. Ask someone where they suggest for a break and then you can use the map to navigate your way there and back.
Do ask the people around you and get to know them. Monash people are invariably friendly and helpful. They all know what it is like to start a new job but may have forgotten some of the (to them) basic things that you need to know. Getting your access to Monash Information TechnologyAll new staff are granted access to a wide range of IT resources to enable them to fulfil their role at Monash University. Many areas have a local IT person who will help to get you set up with an account. The use of IT facilities and resources of the University must be in accordance with the policy - "Information Technology Use Policy - Staff and Other Authorised Users". Your Monash email account is very important as it is the only email address that the university will use to communicate official business with you. For more IT information, please check the ITS staff page , ITS Information for new staff or ask your local Faculty or Department IT support staff.
