Visiting Monash University

Each year Monash University hosts visitors from other Australian and international universities as well as visitors from other levels of education, research organisations and industry.

Monash welcomes visitors as they play an important role in ensuring we are engaged in a wide community of interests at national and international levels.

This website has been developed to provide information to potential visitors to Monash where you are either interested in, or intending to visit one of Monash University's campuses, to undertake one of the following activities:

research; delivering workshops; presenting an occasional lecture; participating in a conference; sharing of knowledge and information; attending meetings; observing Monash University activities; providing consultancy services.

Visitors generally stay between a few days to six weeks however some visitors to Monash University can stay for up to 12 months, provided certain conditions are met. The area inviting you would normally determine the period of your stay and the relevant University policy would apply accordingly.

Terms and Conditions for Visitors

Your acceptance of the offer to visit Monash University will also constitute acceptance of the terms of the visit. The terms will include all conditions stated in your invitation letter and outlined in the Terms Sheet. The following terms sheets apply according to the length of your visit:

International Visitors

As an international visitor it is essential that you obtain an appropriate visa prior to entering Australia.

Where international visitors intend to undertake any business or work-related activity in any Australian University, the Australian Government's Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) requires that the visa an international visitor enters Australia on, must provide the visitor with the right to work in Australia.

"Work related activities" include activities which would normally be undertaken by the visitor in their home country. For example, delivering a lecture, taking or assisting in a tutorial or undertaking research.

If an international visitor enters Australia on a Tourist Visa and undertakes any activity similar to the work they undertake in their home country, Monash University will not be able to reimburse any travel costs. This includes reimbursement of any previously agreed costs or fee for service.

Visitor visas

The following visas are possible visa categories for visitors:

Visits of less than six (6) weeks

As an international visitor to Monash University it is your responsibility to ensure you have the right visa when visiting Australia for a period of less than six (6) weeks. Where any work-related activities are undertaken, international visitors must not travel on a tourist visa. In most instances, and subject to eligibility, the correct visa will be either an ETA Visa or Business (Short Stay) Visa.

Visits between six (6) weeks to 12 months

Where an international visitor intends to visit Monash University for a period which is between six (6) weeks to 12 months, Monash will assist the faculties with the visa process.

Employment visas

The following visas are possible categories for international academics who would be employed by Monash University and stay for between 90 days to 12 months or longer. The visa application process is managed by Monash University HR department in consultation with the faculty in which the academic will work:
