Providing internet access to visitorsThere are two approaches to enable a short-stay visitor to have internet access when visiting Monash. 1. Set up an external account to enable access to Monash Wireless or EduroamIf the short-stay visitor brings with them their own mobile devices (eg laptop, iPhone, iPad etc) they can begiven limited access to restricted Monash information and services through an external account. This includes access to the internet so that visitors can access their home email. An external account can be created in advance of a visitor arriving at Monash by logging a request through the eSolutions Service Desk. These accounts are very simple to establish and can be set up within a short time frame. 2. Set up a specific computer as a local accountIf the short-stay visitor is not intending to bring with them their own mobile devices (eg laptop, iPhone, iPad)a local account can be set up on a specific computer. This will enable access to the internet so that visitors can access their home email. The Faculty / Department must log a request through the eSolutions Service Desk for a local account to be set up on a specific computer. When the visitor logs onto this specific computer, they are to tick “Workstation only” at the logon screen. The local account needs to be set up in advance of a visitor arriving at Monash. Printing: By logging onto a specific computer the visitor will be able to use the printers connected to this computer. Internet access: In order to have internet access, the visitor will still need to have an external account set up as outlined in (1) above. Setting up an external account for visitors prior to their arrivalThe Faculty / Department will need to contact the eSolutions Service Desk and submit the following request:
The following information about the guest user is to be provided in the online request:
Activating the visitor’s external accountOption 1 – Prior to visitor’s arrivalThe external account can be created within a short time-frame in an emergency situation however requests to have the external account created should be logged with eSolutions in advance of the visitor arriving at Monash. Once the external account has been created, the eSolutions Service Desk will contact the guest user on the email submitted via the online request and provide the USERNAME the visitor is to use to access some of Monash University’s IT facilities and services. The visitor will also be requested to respond to the eSolutions email to arrange obtaining a password for the username that has just been created. Their visitor’s password will not be emailed but communicated directly by eSolutions over the phone to the visitor. Option 2 – Upon the visitor’s arrivalOn arrival at Monash University the visitor can contact the eSolutions Service Desk to obtain the logon and password for the external account. Accessing Monash Wireless or EduroamOnce the external account has been set up, the visitor is to step through the following to log on to the internet:
How to change a password for external accountsIf a visitor forgets the password for their external account, they can either call the eSolutions Service Desk or contact their Faculty Supervisor / Sponsor who can log a request with the eSolutions Service Desk. The following information is to be provided to eSolutions:
Role accountsSome faculties have set up role accounts in the past to provide internet access to visitors. These accounts are associated with a particular role for example, a Project Officer. eSolutions prefer for security and access reasons that role accounts are not used for visitors. The preferred approach for visitors is to have an external account set up that provides a specific logon and password for the visitor. |
