Intellectual Property and Copyright
Intellectual Property
The University's policy on Intellectual Property is contained in Statute 11.2- Intellectual Property and the Intellectual Property Regulations made under the statute. Each piece of legislation is accompanied by an explanatory memorandum. The Intellectual Property legislation deals with ownership of intellectual property created by academic and general staff of the University. Questions about IP issues should be directed to the Solicitor's office. The Paid Outside Work Policy will apply to consulting work done within the faculty independently of the University.
Copyright
Copyright is the legal regime which protects an owner's rights in
- Literary works
books, computer programs, articles in newspapers and journals (whether published in hard copy or on-line) , compilations (eg a data base) some advertisements (copyright might not subsist in very short ads) and song lyrics
- Artistic works
drawings (including diagrams, maps, charts and plans) paintings, sculpture, photographs, buildings/ models of buildings and works of artistic craftsmanship
- Musical works
the written notes, not the sounds
- Dramatic works
works which are capable of being performed, includes a choreographic show or other dumb show and a scenario or script for a film.
- Film (and video)
the visual images, a separate copyright will subsist in the script
- Sound recordings (includes audio tapes)
the sounds, a separate copyright will subsist in the musical score
- Broadcasts
TV or radio transmission
- Performer's right
There is limited protection for an individual's performance in a dramatic or musical work, dance, presentation of a lecture/speech.
