Taking photographs

For a wide range of professional photographic and digital imaging services contact the Photographic Unit.

Eye-catching images that show people doing interesting things or in unusual environments are preferred.

General points to remember

Get people doing what they do or in the environment they work in.

Group photographs

  • Sometimes less is more. Groups larger than five or six people in a picture do not reproduce well - if you have a big group, select key representatives for a photo.
  • If a group shot is necessary, ensure another photo is taken of the leader and one or two other representatives.

Setting

  • Try to photograph people in their natural setting - at their work place or doing their job if possible.
  • Take photos reasonably close to the person - no need to show their feet.
  • If they are receiving an award, ask them to hold the award at about chest height.
  • Before you take a photo, ask people to remove their name tags and put down handbags, coats and drinks.
  • Be aware of the background.
  • Talk to the person being photographed - this should ensure a more natural photo.

Choice

  • Take several photos, choice is important.
  • If you are using a digital camera, take high resolution photos as they can be used in both an online and print format.
