Legal Requirements
Many chemicals are:
| Hazardous substances |
With toxicological properties that are hazardous to people's health e.g. toxic, corrosive, irritant, carcinogenic, mutagenic or and/or |
| Dangerous goods |
With physio-chemical properties that are dangerous e.g. explosive, oxidising, flammable, corrosive and/or |
| Drugs and poisons |
With other properties such as psychoactive effects e.g. drugs of addiction such as heroin or cocaine and/or |
| Carcinogen Registry |

Information About Chemicals
There are many references available that provide information about the hazardous and dangerous properties of chemicals. One of these is the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). The University subscribes to an on-line MSDS database Chemwatch.
Chemwatch is only accessible from computers on the Monash University network and can be accessed by clicking on the CHEMWATCH image below.
In addition there are other chemical safety information databases that can be accessed if you have a valid Monash Authcate account: databases.
