Occupational Health and Safety Chemical Safety Information

Legal Requirements

Many chemicals are:

Hazardous substances with toxicological properties that are hazardous to people's health e.g. toxic, corrosive, irritant, carcinogenic, mutagenic or and/or
Dangerous goods with physio-chemical properties that are dangerous e.g. explosive, oxidising, flammable, corrosive and/or
Drugs and poisons with other properties such as psychoactive effects e.g. drugs of addiction such as heroin or cocaine and/or
Carcinogen Registry register your use of carcinogens with Occupational Health and Safety

Information About Chemicals

There are many references available that provide information about the hazardous and dangerous properties of chemicals. One of these is the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). The University subscribes to an on-line MSDS database Chemwatch.

Chemwatch is only accessible from computers on the Monash University network and can be accessed by clicking on the CHEMWATCH image below.
