Use of Signage for Machine and Equipment Safety

Where machines and equipment are in operation sufficient signage must be implemented describing the hazards associated preferably where entering the work area and/or the location of equipment.  The main classification of signs for machinery and equipment may include:

  1. Danger signs warning of a particular hazard or hazardous condition that is likely to be life-threatening.
  2. Warning signs warning of a hazard or hazardous condition that is not likely to be life threatening.
  3. Mandatory signs that indicate that an instruction must be carried out.
  4. Prohibition signs that indicate that an action or activity is not permitted.

Further information on signage can be found in the “Guidelines for identification of areas requiring hazardous or regulatory signage”
