Course Information

General

Occupational Health and Safety conducts training courses for staff across all campuses and centres.  A listing of our A-Z courses can be found on the Occupational Health and Safety website.  Some courses are also appropriate for post-graduate and honours students. The Occupational Health & Safety Training Guide is available on the Occupational Health and Safety web site and lists:

  • the Occupational Health and Safety courses available at Monash University,
  • the essential Occupational Health and Safety training requirements for staff, students and contractors in various roles;
  • the recommended Occupational Health and Safety training requirements for staff, students and contractors in various roles;
  • the time period during which each course remains current, ie the time period after which the course must be repeated.

In addition, the individual Occupational Health and Safety training needs of departments can be determined through discussions with departmental safety officers or by contacting Occupational Health and Safety on 990 51016 (ext. 51016) or the  OHS&E Consultant responsible for your area.

Department Specific Training

Occupational Health and Safety is able to conduct training for individual departments or faculties upon request but a minimum number of participants is required depending on the course type.  These courses can be tailored to meet the specific needs of the department or faculty.  Further information on department specific training can be sought from your OHS&E consultant.

First aid courses can also be tailored to meet the needs of individual departments or campuses.  Departments should contact Occupational Health and Safety to arrange training.  A discount for groups of 15 or more staff may apply.

Training for Safety Officers and Health & Safety/Deputy Health & Safety Representatives

In accordance with recommendations approved by the Occupational Health & Safety Policy Committee (OHSPC), all health and safety representatives and safety officers are required to attend Occupational Health and Safety training to enable them to fulfill their Occupational Health and Safety roles effectively. 

This will include introductory training for all new health and safety representatives/deputy  health and safety representatives and safety officers, with a minimum of 2 days of occupational health and safety training per year for all existing health and safety representatives//deputy  health and safety representatives and safety officers.

Enrolments

Enrolment to courses can be done as follows:-

  • online application; or
  • downloaded from the Occupational Health and Safety website; or
  • forms obtained from all zone Occupational Health and Safety committee chairpersons, safety officers, health & safety representatives, first aid co-ordinators, radiation safety officers and biosafety officers.

Completed enrolment forms must be sent to Occupational Health and Safety, Clayton, no later than 5 working days prior to the commencement of a course.    Participants will receive confirmation of their enrolment approximately 5 working days prior to the commencement of a course.

Where the number of enrolments exceeds the number of places available, alternative dates and times will be offered if possible. Additional courses will also be scheduled if the demand for courses exceeds the number of places available.  However, should there be an insufficient number of participants for any given course, the course may be cancelled.

Cancellation Policy

Occupational Health and Safety conducts most training courses on a cost recovery basis and are also able to offer several courses free of charge. Late cancellations or enrollees who fail to cancel, result in wasted departmental and occupational health and safety funds. In addition, it also denies other interested staff an opportunity to attend. Whilst late cancellations are sometimes inevitable due to unforeseen circumstances, Occupational Health and Safety will in the main, adopt the following policy:

  • A full refund will be provided where notification is received seven (7) working days prior to the commencement of a course.
  • There will be a 25% charge for cancellations received more than three (3) working days prior to the commencement of a course.
  • No refund will be given for course cancellations notified after this time.
