Australia Day honours for Monash staffTwo Monash academics were each awarded an Order of Australia in the 2000 Australia Day honours in recognition of their commitment and achievements in medicine. Professor David de Kretser, who is the current director and the founder, in 1991, of the Monash Institute of Reproduction and Development, received his award in recognition of his significant contribution to medical science as a researcher, educator and university administrator. He is recognised in the medical community as an expert in men's health and has received numerous accolades from many international scientific groups. However, he considers this award to be one of the most meaningful. "This honour is not simply recognition of my personal achievements, it also acknowledges my team of dedicated and talented medical scientists who have been instrumental in making our medical research discoveries," Professor de Kretser said. Professor Mark Wahlqvist, currently associate dean for International Health and Development, and chair of the Asia Pacific Health and Nutrition Centre of the Monash Asia Institute and chair of the Food and Agriculture Organisation Centre of Excellence at Monash, played a major role in the development of national and international nutrition science, education and policy. He received his award for service to medicine, particularly in the field of human nutrition and public health, and as a contributor to the International Union of Nutritional Sciences, the World Health Organisation's Nutrition Committee and the Australian Nutrition Foundation. Congratulating Professor de Kretser and Professor Wahlqvist, dean of Medicine Professor Nick Saunders said the faculty was very proud that the contributions to medical science and to the broader community by two of its most distinguished medical scientists had been recognised with these awards. Among current and former Monash staff and alumni who received Australia Day honours were: Officer of the Order of Australia (AO)Professor Raoul Mortley (MA 1968), awarded AO for service to tertiary education, particularly as an administrator, and to the humanities in the fields of philosophy and ancient history.
