Kevin
Foster Englishman Kevin Foster was, in his own words, "ready for sun and cricket" when he came to Australia in 1987.
Already having a Bachelor of Arts from Manchester and a Master of Arts from Saskatchewan in Canada, he received a Monash Postgraduate Scholarship and completed his PhD in English while working casually as a sessional tutor.
In 1991, Kevin moved to the University of New England. Unsuited to life in a small town, however, he returned to Monash three years later as a lecturer in English with a special focus on enhancement studies, a role he continues to enjoy today.
This year marks Kevin's promotion to senior lecturer, and his workload now includes transition, converting first-year subjects for delivery by distance and co-developing new units in regional and national identity and in war literature.
Kevin's keen interest in war centres on questions of national identities, masculinities and heroism, all of which he regards as "central to modern Australian culture". Last year he published a well-received book on the subject entitled Fighting Fictions. He hopes to take study leave in Argentina and London later this year to research a new book on Western representations of Latin America.
In his free time, Kevin enjoys going to the cinema and playing soccer and, along with his young son James, is an avid Manchester United fan.
