Paul
Wellington As a developer of solar-powered vehicles, senior lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering Paul Wellington may hold the key to our future modes of travel.
Ironically, Paul doesn't have an engineering degree. He graduated from the University of Adelaide in the 1960s with a degree in chemistry, and after graduating worked in the plastics industry for five years. During this time, his focus shifted to materials engineering.
In 1972, he came to teach at the then Caulfield Institute of Technology and has since completed his masters in education at Monash. His cross-disciplinary experience has enabled him to take a multi-disciplinary approach to his teaching, which, he says, has "the dual benefits of encouraging students to develop a big picture perspective and prepare them better for the workforce".
In his 28 years lecturing in materials engineering, Paul has developed successive innovative solar vehicle projects with hundreds of students. He has also led student teams for the Mileage Marathon, coming second only to Ford, for three solar car races from Darwin to Adelaide and for the World Solar Cycle Challenge.
In an effort to encourage school students to study and enjoy science, engineering and solar energy, Paul has organised state, national and, more recently, international primary and secondary school solar competitions.
Although increasingly immersed in academic life, Paul still finds time to travel. He also hopes to study further in the near future.
