At the official launch of the Monash University Environment Policy last week are, from left, director of operations with the Australian Greenhouse Office Mr John McBride, dean of Engineering Professor Mike Brisk, state member for Oakleigh Ms Ann Barker MP, state minister for the Environment and Conservation The Hon. Sherryl Garbutt MP, and the parliamentary commissioner for the environment in New Zealand Dr Morgan Williams. |
Monash has become the first university in Victoria and the second in Australia to sign a Greenhouse Challenge agreement with the Commonwealth Government.
Under the agreement, Monash aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from its Clayton campus by 13 per cent over two years, and plans to introduce other campuses to the program progressively.
The Greenhouse Challenge is just one of several initiatives planned under the university's new Environment Policy, launched on Clayton campus last week. Other initiatives include reducing the amount of waste going into landfill under the Becoming a Waste Wise Organisation agreement, and promoting teaching and research in the environmental sciences and related areas through the Monash Environment Institute.
Speaking at the launch, the State Minister for Environment and Conservation, The Hon Sheryll Garbutt MP, said that Monash had a very impressive list of commitments to environment policy.
"Monash is leading by example in partnering with the Commonwealth and State Governments and the community on these matters," she said.
The dean of Engineering, Professor Mike Brisk, said the Monash Environment Institute aimed to encourage interdisciplinary programs of research and consultancy and would be coordinating the many activities related to environmental issues across the university.
"The institute will provide improved communication among faculties, schools, departments, research centres and individuals, enhancing the reputation of the university as a centre of excellence in studies of the environment," he said.
"As well, the institute will play a role in identifying opportunities for the establishment of innovative, effective and viable interdisciplinary teaching programs at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels."
The Waste Wise Organisation agreement involves Monash, in cooperation with the Southeastern Waste Management Group and EcoRecycle Victoria, reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfill from its Australian campuses.

Vice-chancellor Professor David Robinson has announced interim arrangements for the Gippsland campus until a pro vice-chancellor Monash Gippsland is appointed.
The new position, recommended late last year by the Gippsland Campus Working Party, was approved by Monash Council at its December meeting and has now been advertised.
In a letter to Gippsland staff last week, Professor Robinson said that until the new PVC Gippsland arrives, "which, being realistic, will not be for three or four months", the three major components of the role will be covered "by an excellent team".
Campus direction will be provided by Mr Bob Burnet, assistant general manager Student Services, who was a member of the Gippsland Campus Working Party. Mr Burnet is to carry out the majority of the functions Professor Anderson performed and report to deputy vice-chancellor Professor Alan Lindsay as do all campus directors.
Academic leadership on the campus will be provided by Professor Jim Jarvis, who will advise Mr Burnet when senior academic input is required and act as chair of the Academic Development Forum when it is established.
Professor Jarvis will also act as director of the Institute of Regional Studies if the Institute is formed before the arrival of the new PVC.
Professor Tony Taylor will work closely with Professor Jarvis and act when he is unavailable.
Professor John Rosenberg will chair the Board of GREEN Inc. in the interim. He will be assisted by Professor Laurence Dooley, who will pay particular attention to the further development of relationships with key industries in the Gippsland region.
Professor John Anderson, who has been campus director of Gippsland since 1997, takes up his new position as PVC for Monash University South Africa this week.
The recommendations of the Gippsland Campus Working Party can be found at www.adm.monash.edu.au/unisec/ntb/ntbind.htm
