Celebrating the exceptional

Award winners, from left, Peter Stagg, Sue Steele, Aaron Wigley, Andrew Haines, Pam Miller and Kathy Buxton are congratulated by Professor David Robinson (third from right). Photo by Greg Ford.

Six exceptional general staff were presented with the 1999 Vice-Chancellor's Awards last week, at a ceremony Professor David Robinson called one of his favourite occasions.

"Each year the selection panel is bowled over by the quality of the work and the dedication of staff nominated for these awards," he said.

"Their outstanding contributions have been sustained over a number of years. They have changed the infrastructure of the university and given first-rate support to academics."

For the first time in the history of the awards, the 1999 winners have all been involved in the development of technology at Monash.

Ms Sue Steele's award was based on her exceptional performance as the university's systems librarian and university webmaster.

Mr Peter Stagg created a state-of-the-art computer laboratory for the Language Centre which, in addition to servicing the university community, generated income from commercial organisations.

Ms Pam Miller was acknowledged for her exceptional professionalism in the presentation of videoconferencing and teleteaching environments.

Ms Kathy Buxton, Mr Aaron Wigley and Mr Andrew Haines have been very active in the Technical Working Party and, outside their normal work requirements, have provided top-quality IT conferences to the university community over the last few years. They won a team award.

Each of the winners received a certificate, a cash bonus and a permanent citation in the Monash University Calendar.

Nominations for the 2000 Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Exceptional Performance by General Staff close on 3 November. Further details including selection criteria are at www.monash.edu.au/ personnel/sdu/index3.htm

Local business agreement in Malaysia

Monash University Malaysia again made history recently when it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the SMI Association of Malaysia, an organisation which represents some 100,000 small and medium-scale enterprises in Malaysia.

To coincide with the campus's second birthday on 23 February, Monash Malaysia's pro vice-chancellor, Professor Bob Bignall, signed the MOU in the presence of Selangor State executive councillor and chairman in-charge of Investments and Industries, Dato' Tang See Hang.

Representing the SMI Association was its president, Mr Looi Teong Chye, who expressed his organisation's great appreciation of Monash's involvement as a partner in its nation-wide Electronic Commerce Roadshow 2000.

Also present at the signing ceremony were OCBC Bank's senior vice-president of Corporate Banking Division, Ms Helen Lim, and representatives from other sponsors of the Electronic Commerce Roadshow, namely Compaq Computers Sdn Bhd, Federal Express and TPC Sdn Bhd.

Mr Looi said that with Monash's participation in providing the electronic commerce training workshops, proprietors of small and medium-scale enterprises would now be able to equip themselves with electronic commerce knowledge and skills to enhance their businesses.

Under the MOU, the SMI Association will recruit 300 participants for a series of electronic commerce workshops to be held at Monash's Malaysia campus in Bandar Sunway.

In welcoming the participants to the ceremony, the new pro vice-chancellor said that one of the defining themes of Monash was engagement.

"This means engagement with the communities we serve through our research, consulting and professional activities. This is how we can ensure that our academic programs are informed by current practice and experience, and this in turn ensures that the graduates we produce are highly attractive to employers," he said.

Professor Bignall added that the university was seeking opportunities to further strengthen its strategic alliances with the corporate sector and other government and private research institutions in line with its mission as a dynamic and research-based university.

Returning from abroad

Final-year materials engineering and language student Peter King is one of many students who have recently returned to their studies at Monash's Australian campuses after periods at overseas universities.

As part of the Monash Abroad scheme, Peter spent three months at the University of Kiev, which he says was an enriching experience.

"The sheer richness and accessibility of the culture was a real highlight with opera, theatre and ballet tickets available at 60 Australian cents," he said.

"From the point of view of my studies, I found that universities in Russia and the Ukraine are not used to student visitors and have no support systems for them."

"I was largely dependent on the links that had already been provided for me by Associate Professor Marko Pavlyshyn, the director of the Centre of European Studies. His support was invaluable," he added.

Staff or students who want to know more about the scheme should contact the Monash Abroad Office on extn 32311.

Writing for Campus Review

Campus Review is planning to launch a new section titled 'Postgraduate forum' and is asking for contributions from postgraduates.

The forum will focus on postgraduate students who are conducting their degrees by either coursework or research. It will provide students with an opportunity to let the academic community know what they are working on.

Monash students are strongly advised to first discuss any plans for submitting articles to Campus Review with their supervisors and to allow their supervisors to check any material before sending it to the paper.

For further information, contact Mr David Myton at davidm@camrev.com.au or telephone (02) 9936 8695.
