Susan
Charman Senior research fellow at Parkville campus Dr Susan Charman is dedicated to the study of pharmaceutics as a means of improving the way in which drugs are delivered to the human body.
Originally from Florida in the US, Susan obtained her Bachelor of Science and her PhD in pharmaceutics in her home state. She then worked for two years as a senior research scientist at a pharmaceutical company in New York where she met her future husband Bill, with whom she continues to share a passion for pharmaceutics.
In 1989, Susan and Bill moved to Australia to take up appointments at Parkville, which Susan describes as "a two-year experiment that's still in progress 11 years later". Susan's main focus is research into the formulation, delivery and absorption of drugs. She also coordinates her department's postgraduate program and supervises postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows, who she says, "keep me on my toes".
Susan sees enormous opportunities working in pharmaceutics in Australia, generally, and at Parkville in particular, which is regarded as a centre of excellence in biomedical research. She also maintains strong links with the pharmaceutical industry, both in Australia and overseas.
In the rare breaks Susan takes from her demanding job, she likes to relax by gardening and working out at the gym.
