Manager
of Medical Illustration Arthur Wall leads a team who can turn the most mundane
aspects of the human body into a work of art.
Arthur's high-tech sphere of work is a long way from his beginnings in the mid-Western Australian town of Geraldton. Knowing from an early age that he wanted to work in photography, he got his first job in the field when he was just 13. After completing a diploma in Art and Design, he moved to Melbourne to undertake an honours degree in Applied Science (Photography) at RMIT.
In 1992, Arthur came to work at Monash in the Anatomy department, which he says opened his mind to "the amazing possibilities of medical photography". Now established in his own unit within the Faculty of Medicine, he and his team devise new and better ways to help out Medicine with digital imaging and graphics, as well as servicing other areas of the university.
A career highlight to date has been attending the Biomedical World Congress, where Arthur presented a paper on forensic aspects of the Shroud of Turin in Florida in 1994, and two posters in Amsterdam last year.
Arthur, who will marry later this year, enjoys action sports and takes a keen interest in the world and the people around him. "They're a constant source of wonder," he says.
