Organ builder honoured

On the eve of the 20th birthday of the pipe organ in Robert Blackwood Hall, its builder Dr Jurgen Ahrend was awarded an honorary doctor of laws.

Throughout Dr Arhend's distinguished career, he has been responsible for the building or restoration of more than 150 mechanical tracker action organs in Europe, the US, and of course, at Monash.

Dr Ahrend began work on the construction of the organ in October 1978 and by February 1980 the installation of the Louis Matheson Pipe Organ, including the voicing and the tuning of its 3097 pipes, was completed.

The only baroque organ in Australia, it is considered one of the best concert hall organs in the world. The citation read at the ceremony noted that Dr Arhends would be remembered as the most eminent organ builder of his day.
