Eureka finalist

Developing working strategies to give young people a voice in their local communities earned Peninsula campus education lecturer Dr Karen Malone a nomination in this year's prestigious Australian Museum Eureka Prize.

Dr Malone, who is also the Asia-Pacific director of UNESCO's Growing Up in Cities program, was nominated for the Allen Strom Eureka Prize for Environmental Education for her work in establishing better communication lines and partnerships between young people, government officials and urban planners.

Last year, Dr Malone and her research team undertook in-depth research and analysis on behalf of the Frankston City Council into the needs of young people in the local community.

On the basis of her Australian research, she was invited to Papua New Guinea by senior government officials to conduct similar work on youth culture and needs in that country.

Dr Malone was one of five finalists in her section, chosen from a field of more than 60 nominations.

The winners of each section and more information about the award can be accessed at www.austmus.gov.au/eureka/
