InJung and Young-A Cho

Dr InJung and Dr Young-A Cho are the husband-and-wife team who run Korean Studies at Monash's Clayton campus.

Both born in Seoul, the two met while teaching languages at Korea University. When the opportunity came to teach at Monash, they looked forward to the experience of living and working in a Western country.

They arrived in Melbourne on a Saturday in February 1992, with nowhere to live and no time to adjust before semester started the following Monday. "We were too busy to worry about coping with the cultural change," they laugh.

Korean Studies had only been available at Monash since 1989, so Young-A and InJung found themselves working seven days a week to develop course materials, including writing text books.

A career highlight for the Chos came in the mid-1990s with the launch of their world-first interactive, online Korean language course. It was named the most-visited website of its kind, and has received favourable press in Korea.

Since coming to Australia, the Chos have become keen cross-country skiers, and can be spotted roller-blading around Jells Park in the warmer months.
