A postdoctoral research fellow in biological sciences, Dr Kay Morris is developing
expertise in the hot topic of algal blooms.
Born in Adelaide, Kay originally trained as a nurse, working in the health field for several years. Wanting to broaden her horizons, however, she subsequently undertook an honours science degree at Flinders University. After a further year doing lab work for Flinders, she decided to pursue her own research and transferred to the University of Adelaide to commence her PhD on the effects of water salinity and nutrients on freshwater plants.
Kay came to Monash two years ago, where she is now involved in a national research and development program conducting experiments on the impact of nutrient enrichment on wetlands.
She says an added bonus of working in Biological Sciences is the proximity of her office to the department's impressive tidal marine and freshwater aquariums. Used for teaching purposes, a spectacular array of colourful aquatic plant and animal life is on display.
Another plus for Kay is the challenge of getting out into the field, and she nominates her most exciting field trip to date as a journey to the Amazon while attending a conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Away from work, Kay enjoys travelling and keeping fit, and she is a keen cook.
