With 25 years experience as senior telephonist at Caulfield campus, Joan
Groves has developed an extensive network of positive work relationships across
the university.
Joan landed her first job as a switchboard operator at the age of 16, recalling that the communications technology at that time consisted of "cords and plugs, lights and buzzers", a far cry from the sophisticated computer facilities now in place. She joined Caulfield one year later.
A visual impairment meant that driving was never an option, so she decided to invest in land instead of a car, planning to sell after 10 years to travel overseas. But she stayed on at Caulfield, a decision both she and the university have never regretted.
"I am very fortunate that through my work I have had some wonderful experiences and met some fantastic people," said Joan. For instance, she accompanied the Faculty of Engineering's first solar car trip to New South Wales.
Of particular note is her friendship with fellow telephonist of 23 years Eileen Cieslak. Both women live locally, and their cats are brothers.
Outside of work, Joan enjoys downhill skiing and speed driving at Sandown Park, with the help of support organisations. This year, she also acted as special adviser to a 'Blue Heelers' actor playing a person with a visual impairment.
