Indian research student Mr Karl Gheewalla came to the Clayton campus recently to study the operations of Melbourne's water and sewerage as a recipient of a research fellowship. Mr Gheewalla, who is a University of Mumbai commerce graduate, won the three-week National Centre for South Asian Studies Visiting Research Fellowship. Based in the Economics department, he researched and wrote a report on 'Has the corporatisation of Melbourne's water supply been beneficial to consumers?'. The research involved investigating how and why Melbourne's water supply was corporatised in the early 1990s and whether it brought advantages to residents. He wanted to take answers back with him to India, which is looking for alternative ways of delivering water supplies, as access to water is one of Mumbai's most pressing problems. The fellowship gave Mr Gheewalla a chance to see and use Monash's wide range of academic expertise, library, internet and professional resources and take trips out in the field to places including the Werribee plant.
