A transport officer for the Monash Student Association (MSA), Jim Black describes
himself as 'a local guy at heart'.
Jim studied for his Bachelor of Arts at Monash in the 1980s, where he majored in sociology. In the middle of his BA, however, he took a year off to study cinema at Rusden, thinking he wanted to be a scriptwriter. Instead, his year at Rusden raised his political consciousness about community and environmental issues, and he started cycling.
Upon his return to Monash to finish his BA, Jim became actively involved in student issues. As part of a student team backed by MSA, he developed transport options for the university. The strategies included improved facilities for cyclists, setting up a ride share scheme and improved bus services.
In 1991, after completing his Diploma of Education, Jim was employed by MSA as a transport officer, and he now jobshares with workmate Simon Hall. A mark of success for the pair are the monthly free breakfasts at Wholefoods, which are organised for staff and student cyclists, with sponsorship from local bike shops.
Jim lives locally with his family, and his second child is due on Melbourne Cup Day. He is a keen organic gardener and opportunity shop bargain hunter.
