In her position as project manager for the Faculty of Engineering's Centre
for Advanced Materials Technology, Dr Astrid Nordmann crosses the traditional
academic/ administrative staff divide.
Born in Germany, Astrid moved with her family to Australia when she was six, then to the US six years later. The family missed Australia, however, and returned to Melbourne the following year.
While attending secondary school, Astrid worked part-time as a veterinary assistant, planning to study veterinary science when she finished school. Becoming too attached to her 'patients', however, prompted her to study science at Monash instead, followed by a PhD in materials engineering.
She was then awarded a two-year postdoctoral fellowship to research the optical properties of ceramics at the University of Warwick in England.
On her return home, Astrid joined Monash's Centre for Advanced Materials Technology. The centre acts as a link between the university and industry, focusing on industrial applications by consulting, researching and developing products, and organising conferences and workshops.
Astrid says her job provides her with a challenge due to the wide variety of skills required.
"I really enjoy the unusual mix of management, finance and industry liaison in a technical area," she said.
In her spare time, Astrid enjoys aerobics, roller blading and reading.
