Flexible access through My.Monash portal

The My.Monash portal, a gateway to online information and services at the university and on the web, is now available to the wider Monash community.

About 80 people last week attended the launch of the portal at Berwick campus. The portal has already won a national award for excellence in IT.

First-year arts student Anna Schoo officially released the portal, which she said had been her key resource for accessing relevant information at Monash.

My.Monash uses cutting-edge technology that gives staff and students online access to academic, support and administrative services, including study materials, discussion groups, student enrolment, email, calendar, study and workplace resources, weather, news and the internet.

The portal can be customised to add, remove or re-order content to suit the way each person wishes to work, and to link to other web sites of interest.

It was developed by the Flexible Learning and Teaching Program, with input from Web and Internet Facilities, the Centre for Higher Education Development, the Centre for Learning and Teaching Support, and Monash staff and students.

Mr Alan McMeekin, executive director of the Information Technology Services Division, said the portal offered faster and easier access to information.

"My personal vision is that the My.Monash portal will become the most commonly used application within the university because it provides links to many support systems and services of interest to staff and students."

Project sponsor and deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and Planning) Professor Alan Lindsay said the portal actively enhanced and facilitated learning, teaching and workplace environments.

He said the portal provided the flexible access required to meet the increasingly diverse needs of students as they undertook study, whether on campus, in the workplace, or at an overseas learning centre.

"This innovation enables Monash to further its position as a world-class provider of quality education," he said.

Vice-chancellor Professor David Robinson said the portal would further enable the university to be a global organisation.

The portal can be accessed at http://my.monash.edu.au/

London visit

Future student and staff exchanges are possible after a recent visit by Monash staff to the Department of Electronic Engineering at King's College London.

Monash London's pro vice-chancellor Professor Richard White, Professor Greg Egan, head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering at Clayton, and his colleague Dr Le Binh visited King's College London on 26 June.

Discussions during the visit and a tour of the facilities identified several common research interests, including telecommunication engineering, particularly in the areas of radio frequency integrated circuit design and digital signal processing.

The visit also highlighted the possibility of exploring research links and the prospect of staff and student exchanges.

Activity-based costing to come

A two-day planning workshop at the Clayton campus last week kicked off the Strategic Cost Management Project as part of a new approach to financial and cost management at Monash.

Project director Mr John Levine said the project involved undertaking a series of activity-based costing studies over the next 18 months.

The first studies to be conducted over the next five months will examine Monash's central support areas.

"The studies are aimed at gaining a better understanding of the cost of activities in these areas and how these activities are consumed by faculties, departments and business units across the university," he said.

"Activity-based costing will be used to support the transparent and equitable attribution of support costs to faculties and departments."

The project team has been established under the sponsorship of deputy vice-chancellor (Resources) Ms Alison Crook.

Ernst and Young consultant Mr Steve Robertson assisted in last week's workshop and led the development of the costing methodology for the project.

Counting down to Open Day

Full details of Monash Open Day activities at all six Australian campuses are now available at www.monash.edu.au/openday/ along with tips on how to make the most of the weekend on 5 and 6 August.

Monash Open Day Online is a useful tool for prospective students and their families trying to plan ahead in the lead-up to the annual event, according to Monash Open Day director, Associate Professor Naomi White.

"The flexibility and accessibility of the internet means prospective students can check out the program well in advance, ensuring they get the most out of Monash Open Day," she said.

"The website will also interest the general public, because it provides a comprehensive look at the breadth of Monash academic and extracurricular activities."

Monash Open Day Online is designed so users can easily find information about Monash in general, the campus of their choice or what the various faculties have planned for Open Day.

And while you're online, Monash Peninsula's successful Virtual Open Day, introduced last year, can be found at http://neptune.netcomp.monash.edu.au/virtual/

Monash Open Day Online was developed by the University Marketing Office of Public Affairs under the auspices of the Monash Open Day Committee.

Open Day parking

Free parking during Monash Open Day on 5 and 6 August will be available on campus at Berwick, Clayton, Gippsland, Parkville and Peninsula, and at the Victorian Amateur Turf Club, corner Normanby Road and Queens Avenue, at Caulfield campus.

Monash staff at the races

The stands at Caulfield Racecourse were filled with about 275 staff and guests at the recent Monash Race Day.

A few punters got lucky but others went home with empty pockets despite getting some tips from Gold FM announcer Sean Cosgrove.

But even losers were winners with losing ticket draws for prizes including hampers, wine, mobile phones, and an airfare for two taking the edge off lost bets.

Jockey Peter Mertens explained some of the intricacies of the importance of a kilo extra, and losing weight in less than two hours.

Vice-chancellor's Qantas promotional fund

Monash staff can access Qantas travel funds for university-related business and activities.

The university has earned these benefits through a promotional fund operated by the travel liaison office.

The travel funds can be used for initiatives compatible with Monash's global strategy: foundation chairs for the payment of travel for guest speakers, visitors or university executives, and sponsorship events.

Successful applications for these credits have included:
