Web designer for the Information Technology Services Division, Dey Alexander
has creatively combined her background in philosophy with a keen interest in
technology.
Dey came to Monash in 1989 to study for her Bachelor of Arts, majoring in philosophy.
While doing her honours in 1993, she undertook research through the world wide web, which was then in its infancy.
Advised that the resources she was compiling would be useful for others, she had her work produced in book form by a US publisher. It is now in its second edition.
The Department of Philosophy asked her to undertake subsequent technology projects, and she became a web developer for the faculty. During this time, Dey also worked on her PhD in philosophy, from which she is currently taking a break.
Last year, Dey began work with ITS, where she produces graphics and templates, designs layouts, and trains staff.
This year she also initiated the Monash chapter of Webgrrls International to enable women interested in technology to network, mentor and improve their technical skills. There are already more than 80 staff and students in the group.
Dey also maintains her own personal websites, showing photos of her Jack Russell called Bacchus, her motorbike and colourful images from her intrepid travels to India.
