Liza Heslop

A senior lecturer at Peninsula's School of Nursing, Ms Liza Heslop has conducted research into the use of market models for public health provision, revealing both economic advantages and social drawbacks.

Originally from the Swan Hill district, Liza attended boarding school in Melbourne, planning to pursue studies and a career in teaching.

However, on the spur of the moment, she applied instead for the first nursing intake into Lincoln Institute in the early 1970s.

Liza recalls being caught in the centre of the then highly charged debate about "what it took to be a good nurse - hospital or academic training".

After graduating, Liza nursed in Far North Queensland. She also studied arts by correspondence through Monash Gippsland, majoring in the social sciences. On her return to Melbourne, she did her fourth year at Lincoln so she could teach.

She subsequently taught at Western General Hospital for four years, then took up a position as lecturer at Monash Peninsula in 1988.

Liza now chairs the research committee in her school, and coordinates both the masters and honours programs. Her specialty is management in nursing practice, and she is about to submit her PhD on heathcare delivery systems.

Although she finds her PhD all-consuming, Liza still enjoys taking time out to stroll around inner-city Melbourne, where she lives.
