Bruce Morton

Bruce Morton, the manager of the George Jenkins Theatre at Peninsula campus, unites a love of the arts with an aptitude for all things mechanical.

A student of the first Monash intake in 1961, Bruce remembers studying electrical engineering with just a handful of other students.

He recalls that back then 'the farm', as the university was nicknamed, was considered a Utopia because there were more staff than students.

When he graduated, Bruce worked for the Postmaster General's Department (now Telstra), developing microwave technology to deliver television and STD telephone services to Western Australia and Tasmania.

He later joined the Commonwealth Government and spent a year in Antarctica maintaining scientific instrumentation.

He describes Antarctica as "a fantastic place of extremes", where winter brings week-long blizzards and frozen seas, in stark contrast to the dazzling summers abundant with bird life.

In 1976, Bruce joined Monash Clayton to work in the computer centre, before moving to Peninsula in 1979.

In 1991, he became the full-time manager of the George Jenkins Theatre, which hosts 40,000 visitors a year.

The theatre has hosted professional productions such as Melbourne Theatre Company plays and rhythmic artists Tapdogs, and continues to service numerous community groups.

Outside of work, Bruce enjoys cycling, woodwork and music.
