Australian Sports Medal

Monash Sports and Recreation Association director Mr John Campbell has been awarded the Australian Sports Medal for his contribution to university sport at an international, national and regional level.

Mr Campbell said he was honoured to receive one of five medals allocated for Australian University Sport under the category of Office Holders and Administrators.

"When I first began my involvement with university sport in 1976, I had no idea it would lead to something like this," he said.

"Now that university sport has become a career for me, I have been delighted to have had the chance to put something back into an area that I believe is so important for university students and for universities."

Before being appointed Monash SRA director, Mr Campbell was director of Melbourne University Sport and Physical Recreation and president of the Melbourne University Sports Union.

He has been a member of the Australian University Sport Board of Directors since 1994 and has had six years involvement with the World University Summer Games.

Mr Campbell has also held key planning and strategic roles with Australian University Sport and overseen multimillion dollar sports facility development projects at both Monash and Melbourne universities.

He has also coached and played basketball at a national level for many years and retains a strong interest in golf.
