Although working in different fields, Law dean Stephen Parker and his wife
Rhian, a postgraduate student in Community Medicine and General Practice, share
a strong interest in the social dimensions of their respective disciplines.
Originally from Britain, the two met at Cardiff University. She was a research assistant and he was tutoring while doing his PhD on cohabitation law.
They came to Australia in 1987, when Stephen accepted an appointment at the Australian National University. During that time, Rhian worked for a domestic violence crisis centre.
In 1993, they moved to Brisbane, where Rhian directed flexible delivery in postgraduate health studies at the University of Queensland and Stephen had a chair in law at Griffith University.
Two years ago, Stephen became dean at Monash, giving him the opportunity to pursue his progressive vision of law as "an agent of change enabling social justice".
The move also allowed Rhian to focus on her PhD in cosmetic surgery, a topic which she plans to explore in her address to the next meeting of Monash's Administrative and Support Staff Network.
Despite their substantial academic commitments, Rhian is a member of the Welsh chapel and Stephen is chair of their daughters' school council.
