According to politics senior lecturer Dr Paul James, everything he does "has
a political connection", from his work in the Politics department to his life-decisions.
In 1976, after leaving school, Paul went to the US on a one-year scholarship, where he met the then President Gerald Ford.
While in the US, he spent time in the Appalachian Mountains and was struck by the poverty of those who lived in the mountains, especially compared with the comfortable lifestyle of his host family. He also taught at a school for minority groups in New York.
On returning home, Paul travelled around Australia for a year. His experiences included coaching an Aboriginal football team and working at an outback pub, both of which fuelled his interest in socio-political issues.
After doing his PhD at the University of Melbourne, Paul came to Monash. He says his primary interest, both as a teacher and as Arena editor, is in ideas of nationalism, globalism and tribalism.
Paul enjoys both the intensity and flexibility of academic life, which has enabled him to care for his young son while doing research
